HDM Tax Group is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Tax Accountant and Tax Resolution Specialist to join our team.
This position requires applicants to hold an active Certified Public Accountant license or active Enrolled Agent credential at the time of application. Candidates currently studying for the CPA exam must already hold an active Enrolled Agent credential to qualify. Applicants without an active CPA or EA credential will not be considered.
HDM Tax Group serves individuals, business owners, real estate investors, restaurants, investment-related clients, and clients with complex financial circumstances. Our work includes tax preparation, accounting and bookkeeping cleanup, strategic tax planning, and federal and state tax resolution.
The successful candidate will be comfortable preparing multiple types of tax returns, closing business books, reviewing complex financial records, communicating with taxing authorities, managing resolution cases, and explaining technical matters clearly to clients.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and review federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, businesses, estates, trusts, nonprofits, and other entities
- Prepare individual and business tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1065, 1120, and 1120-S
- Close monthly, quarterly, and annual books for business clients
- Reconcile bank, credit card, loan, payroll, and balance-sheet accounts
- Prepare adjusting journal entries and year-end closing entries
- Review financial statements for accuracy, completeness, and tax readiness
- Identify missing information, classification errors, bookkeeping cleanup needs, and compliance concerns
- Work with clients who have commingled personal and business accounts, multiple entities, incomplete records, real estate holdings, investment activity, restaurant operations, or cryptocurrency transactions
- Research individual, business, estate, trust, nonprofit, real estate, investment, and regulatory tax matters
- Identify appropriate tax-planning opportunities based on each client’s circumstances
- Support tax-planning strategies while maintaining accurate compliance and documentation
- Manage federal and state tax resolution matters from initial review through completion
- Review IRS and state tax notices, account transcripts, assessments, penalties, balances, and collection activity
- Communicate with the IRS and state taxing authorities on behalf of clients
- Prepare responses to tax notices and requests for supporting information
- Assist clients with installment agreements, penalty-abatement requests, collection matters, and other available resolution options
- Help evaluate Offers in Compromise and other collection alternatives when appropriate
- Assist with liens, levies, payroll tax matters, unfiled returns, and other federal or state compliance issues
- Prepare and maintain authorization forms, case notes, correspondence, supporting documentation, and deadline records
- Coordinate tax resolution matters with original or amended tax returns, bookkeeping cleanup, and tax-planning engagements
- Explain tax notices, resolution options, requirements, risks, and next steps clearly to clients
- Communicate with clients to request documents, clarify transactions, resolve open questions, and keep engagements moving
- Collaborate with team members on tax preparation, accounting, tax planning, tax resolution, financial reporting, and special projects
- Maintain current knowledge of tax-law changes, GAAP, IRS procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements
Required Qualifications
- Active CPA license or active Enrolled Agent credential
- Candidates studying for the CPA exam must already hold an active EA credential
- Experience preparing individual and business tax returns
- Experience closing books for business clients
- Experience handling IRS or state tax resolution matters
- Ability to review tax transcripts, notices, assessments, penalties, and collection correspondence
- Experience communicating professionally with federal and state taxing authorities
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, double-entry bookkeeping, debits and credits, general ledger accounting, and balance-sheet reconciliation
- Ability to analyze financial statements and identify accounting, reporting, or tax issues
- Experience reviewing client books and identifying cleanup needs before tax preparation
- Proficiency with QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, Quicken, or similar accounting platforms
- Strong case-management skills, including tracking deadlines, correspondence, documentation, and client follow-up
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple client matters and deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Professional, responsive, and client-focused approach
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with a CPA firm, tax firm, tax resolution firm, or advisory-focused accounting practice
- Experience preparing complex individual and business tax returns
- Experience handling incomplete books, commingled accounts, or multiple related entities
- Experience with installment agreements, penalty abatements, amended returns, unfiled returns, liens, levies, payroll tax matters, or other collection cases
- Familiarity with Offers in Compromise and other IRS collection alternatives
- Experience using IRS transcripts, practitioner services, and tax resolution software
- Knowledge of real estate tax matters, including rental properties, depreciation, cost basis, and passive activity rules
- Experience with investment partnerships, private equity, funds, or other investment-related tax reporting
- Experience serving restaurant or hospitality clients, including sales tax, payroll, tip reporting, inventory, and cost of goods sold
- Familiarity with cryptocurrency tax reporting and transaction reconciliation
- Tax-planning experience involving individuals, business owners, real estate investors, or high-net-worth clients
- Ability to identify tax-saving opportunities while maintaining accurate compliance and documentation
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is accurate, organized, proactive, and comfortable managing accounting, tax preparation, and tax resolution responsibilities.
You can take client books from initial review through final close, identify and resolve cleanup issues, and prepare complete and compliant tax returns. You are also able to evaluate tax notices and collection matters, communicate with taxing authorities, maintain organized case records, and guide clients through the resolution process.
You take ownership of deadlines, communicate clearly, and remain composed when working through complicated or incomplete financial situations. You value collaboration, responsiveness, accuracy, and excellent client service.
License Requirement
This is a firm eligibility requirement. Every applicant must hold at least one of the following active credentials when applying:
- Certified Public Accountant
- Enrolled Agent
Applicants who are studying for the CPA exam but do not currently hold an active Enrolled Agent credential are not eligible for this position.
