Quality Control Technician – Precast Concrete Position Summary
Roman Stone is seeking an experienced Quality Control Technician to support its precast concrete manufacturing operations. This position is responsible for inspecting products throughout the manufacturing process—from pre-pour preparation through final post-pour inspection—and confirming that finished products meet approved drawings, project specifications, applicable industry standards, and customer requirements before shipment.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in a precast concrete manufacturing environment and is comfortable identifying deficiencies, documenting inspection results, coordinating corrective actions, and providing final quality approval.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform pre-pour inspections of forms, molds, reinforcing steel, embeds, inserts, blockouts, dimensions, and other components.
- Verify that formwork and reinforcement conform to approved shop drawings, project specifications, and applicable standards before authorizing concrete placement.
- Inspect concrete placement and production processes for compliance with established quality procedures.
- Conduct fresh-concrete testing as required, including slump, air content, temperature, unit weight, and preparation of compressive-strength specimens.
- Perform post-pour inspections to evaluate product dimensions, surface finish, curing, structural integrity, embed placement, and overall workmanship.
- Identify cracks, honeycombing, spalling, dimensional discrepancies, exposed reinforcement, or other defects.
- Determine whether products meet acceptance criteria and document any required repairs or corrective actions.
- Reinspect repaired products and verify that deficiencies have been properly resolved.
- Complete inspection reports, test records, nonconformance reports, repair documentation, and other required quality records.
- Provide final QC approval and sign off on completed precast products before they are released for shipment.
- Confirm that product identification, markings, documentation, and shipping information are accurate.
- Read and interpret shop drawings, engineering drawings, specifications, production schedules, and quality-control plans.
- Work closely with production, engineering, operations, and shipping personnel to resolve quality concerns without disrupting production schedules.
- Maintain calibrated testing and inspection equipment.
- Support internal, customer, and agency inspections or audits.
- Promote a safe, organized, and quality-focused manufacturing environment.
Required Qualifications
- Previous quality-control or inspection experience in a precast concrete manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of precast concrete production, reinforcement, formwork, embeds, concrete placement, curing, finishing, and repair methods.
- Demonstrated ability to independently conduct pre-pour and post-pour inspections.
- Experience approving or signing off on finished precast products before shipment.
- Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, engineering plans, specifications, and dimensional tolerances.
- Familiarity with concrete testing procedures and applicable ASTM standards.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify defects or deviations from specifications.
- Ability to accurately complete inspection reports and maintain organized quality records.
- Clear communication skills and the confidence to stop production or withhold a product from shipment when quality requirements have not been met.
- Ability to work in an active manufacturing environment and safely perform physical inspections of precast products.
Preferred Qualifications
- ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I certification.
- PCI Level I or Level II Quality Control Technician/Inspector certification.
- Experience working with DOT, utility, transportation, municipal, or infrastructure-related precast products.
- Familiarity with NYSDOT, Port Authority, Con Edison, PCI, ACI, and ASTM requirements.
- Experience with nonconformance reporting, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action procedures.
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical education in concrete technology, construction, engineering, or a related field is preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk and stand for extended periods in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to bend, climb, kneel, and access forms and finished precast products for inspection.
- Ability to lift and carry testing or inspection equipment as required.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
- Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment.
