Lateral entry rank and starting base salary depend on prior law enforcement experience. Documented satisfactory job performance is required to qualify for the incremental incentive payments of $2,000 after completion of 3 months of service; $2,000 after completion of 6 months of service; and $2,000 after completion of 12 months of service for a total of $6,000. This amount is not added to the base salary. Continuation of this Recruitment/Hiring Incentive Program is subject to available funding and approval by the Manager.

CLASSIFICATION: Personnel System; Requires satisfactory completion of a twelve month probationary period.
PAY GRADE: SO2
SAFETY SENSITIVE: Yes; Subject to random drug testing per the Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.
Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to preserve the peace and enforces the laws of the State of Georgia. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, protecting life and property, enforcing state laws, maintaining jail security, serving warrants and civil papers, providing courthouse and courtroom security, transporting prisoners, performing necessary functions to ensure safety and well-being of inmates, employees and visitors. It is a demanding position, and when assigned to the jail it requires a heightened state of readiness at all times.
Job Related Requirements
WORK SCHEDULE: Twelve (12) hour shifts from 7:45 PM-7:45 AM will be assigned permanently to nights. Shift assignments are made at the discretion of the Sheriff or his designee. Weekends and holidays are included and overtime is required from time to time.
May be required to work on religious holidays.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Must work cooperatively with others.
When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.
Emergency Position:
This position is designated as an emergency position that requires your attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions. Some examples of emergencies include inclement weather, utility failure, fire or other forced evacuations or as determined by the Manager or safe and effective operation of the jail.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES High school diploma or equivalent required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Must be a United States Citizen.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must possess current POST certification as set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act/Peace Officer's Standards and Training Act.
Must qualify and requalify with service weapon(s) semiannually upon obtaining peace officer certification.
Valid Driver's License required.
Must complete GCIC Security and Awareness training within 10 days of hire.
Must obtain certification in First Aid and CPR within 3 months of hire.
Must complete Basic Jail Certification Course within 6 months of hire.
When assigned to driving the bus to transport inmates: Must possess a Class A or B CDL with passenger endorsement.
When assigned to the Jail Section: Must complete the core module requirements of the jail training program within 2 months of assignment. When assigned to the Field Section, must complete the court training program or field training program within 3 months of assignment.
Previous law enforcement or corrections experience preferred.

(ADA) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including police vehicles, telephones, copiers, two-way radios, firearms, physical restraint equipment, and an intoximeter. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion. No prolonged, extreme physical demands are associated with normal duties or assignments, but may be exerted during emergency situations. Such emergency situations include but not limited to physically restraining hostile persons of much greater size and physically defending oneself from violent physical attack by persons with intent on inflicting serious bodily injury or death. Must be able to exert in excess of one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of fifty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for heavy work.
DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to hear, speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving / receiving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants / from supervisors.
LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires ability to read a variety of state criminal and civil codes, departmental directives, civil processes, state criminal and traffic codes, Unified Government ordinances, court procedures, and informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures. Requires the ability to prepare incident reports, daily logs, arrest reports, time sheets, etc. using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak to groups of people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand complex principles and techniques; to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation; and to make independent judgment in the absence of management.
VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of administrative, technical or professional languages including legal terminology.
NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide and determine percentages.
FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with law enforcement and office equipment.
MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using law enforcement and office equipment. Requires the ability to lift, push, bend and pull objects or materials using body parts as the position necessitates. Requires skilled movements coordinating eyes, hands and fingers accurately and making precise movements with speed.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as telephones, copiers, two-way radios, firearms, physical restraint equipment, and an intoximeter. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR/VISUAL DISCRIMINATION: Position requires binocular vision with good depth perception and peripheral vision, motion detection, high acuity, and light adaptation, as well as the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency.
PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone, two-way radio.
