Senior Freelance Bookkeeper / Internal Accounting Auditor (Project-Based)
Job Type: Contract / Freelance (1099)
Pay: Fixed Project Rate / Milestone-based (Negotiable based on project scope; not hourly)
We are an established small business seeking a seasoned, detail-oriented Freelance Accounting Auditor & Bookkeeper to perform comprehensive reviews and cleanups of our financial records. This engagement is strictly project-to-project (flat fee per deliverable), focusing on full accounting audits, reconciliations, and compliance verification.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct deep-dive internal audits of balance sheets, income statements, and general ledgers.
- Identify discrepancies, unrecorded transactions, misclassifications, and reconciliation errors across multiple years/periods.
- Reconcile complex bank, credit card, and vendor accounts.
- Deliver clean, audit-ready financial statements and summary reports with actionable recommendations.
- Scope out deliverables and agree on flat-fee milestones prior to each project kickoff.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Experience: Minimum 20+ years of hands-on experience in corporate accounting, full-cycle bookkeeping, and internal auditing.
- Small Business Expertise: Proven track record working with privately held small-to-midsize businesses.
- Software Proficiency: Advanced mastery of QuickBooks (Desktop/Online), Excel (pivot tables, complex formulas), and standard accounting software.
- Credentials: CPA, CMA, or advanced degree in Accounting/Finance preferred (or equivalent extensive practical experience).
- Communication: Ability to scope project deliverables clearly, adhere to agreed-upon deadlines, and provide transparent fixed-rate project quotes.
