What You'll Do
As a Correctional Officer I, you'll play a vital role in maintaining the safety and security of the facility while supervising incarcerated individuals and supporting daily operations.
Responsibilities include:
- Supervise incarcerated individuals in housing units, dining areas, work assignments, classrooms, and recreation
- Maintain safety, security, and order by enforcing facility rules and policies
- Conduct security searches, resident counts, and inspections to prevent contraband
- Control movement throughout the facility and monitor access points
- Observe behavior, document incidents, and prepare accurate reports
- Respond to emergencies using approved safety procedures and intervention techniques
- Operate radios, security equipment, restraints, and other issued equipment
- Apply de-escalation techniques and physical intervention when necessary
- Work rotating shifts and assignments as part of a professional security team
- Provide first aid or CPR when necessary
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver's license
- Pass the KDOC written examination, background investigation, medical examination, and drug screening
- No felony convictions
- No adult misdemeanor domestic battery convictions (unless eligible under Kansas law)
- Ability to perform the essential physical functions of the position
- Must obtain a State of Kansas Tax Clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Correctional Officer Certification (earned through KDOC Basic Training)
- CPR/First Aid certification and firearms qualification
- Previous experience in corrections, law enforcement, military, or security
- Strong communication, observation, and conflict resolution skills
