Job Scope
Uses significant independent judgment and familiarity of the field to perform work. May be responsible for
administration of various moderate and high complexity departmental programs and may be the lead a group of
employees. May develop policies and procedures and oversee the implementation and execution of them.
Position Summary
The Athletic Trainer is responsible for facilitating the instruction, guidance, and training of as many students as
possible in the field of sports medicine. Also provides quality emergency care, treatment, and rehabilitation for
injured athletes to minimize and prevent injuries.
Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities
1. Coordinates campus athletic trainer program using solid knowledge.
2. Monitors student athlete emergency care, treatment, and rehabilitation under general supervision from
the team physician.
3. Administers program to provide for emergency care, treatment, and rehabilitation of injured athletes
under the direction and general supervision of the team physicians.
4. Establishes specific procedures to be carried out by a coach and/or student trainer in the event of an
emergency when care of an athlete is needed.
5. Applies devices such as strapping, bandaging and braces designed to prevent or protect against injury.
6. Uses latitude for independent judgement in the decision of when an athlete may return to practice or
resume playing activity following an athletic injury.
7. Initiates and processes athletic claims and medical statements for payment.
8. Performs other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities
expected for this position.
