POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Sleepover Educator (Part-Time)
REPORTS TO: Education Manager
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for directing participants and facilitating all activities, including educational programs, tours, meals, set-up and clean-up, during sleepover programs.
GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Working with a team of Sleepover Educators, engages with, directs and is responsible for participants ages 8 and older after Aquarium operating hours; group sizes up to 60.
2. Greets, checks in and processes required paperwork for sleepover participants as they arrive; help direct storage and transport of participants’ gear.
3. Sets expectations for and enforces policies and protocols with sleepover groups.
4. Prepares and teaches various activities such as educational scavenger hunts, classroom programs, exhibit interpretation, behind-the-scenes tours and other activities.
5. Maintains current knowledge of the Aquarium’s mission, aquarium organisms and their habitats, and applicable policies and procedures
6. Facilitates dinner, breakfast, and evening snack; performs light clean-up of kitchen area, classroom and dishes.
7. Supports security staff during discussion of and walk through of fire evacuation routes.
8. Utilizing handheld radios, maintains communication with security, custodial, gift shop and husbandry staff as needed throughout the event.
9. Distributes and collects program surveys from adult participants.
10. Takes a pro-active role in communicating schedule availability; responds to email correspondence with program updates to affirm receipt.
11. Communicates any logistical or programmatic issues to the Education Manager in a timely manner.
12. Ensures that all participants feel comfortable, are safe, and have a positive, social, educational experience.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Minimum levels)
High school equivalency is required; some college level study in the natural sciences, education or related field and/or experience in an informal education facility (camps, museums, zoos, aquariums, science centers) are desirable. Verified substantive experience working with children is required; examples of acceptable experience include, but are not limited to teaching classes, coaching team sports, camp counseling, leading a 4-H club or scouting program. Ability to obtain an OR Food Handlers’ card is required.
Skills necessary for this position include excellent customer service skills and group management using positive methods. Incumbents must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills that allows them to work closely and effectively with people from different backgrounds, cultures, ages and beliefs. Knowledge of Oregon Coast marine life desirable. Knowledge and ability to use computers and standard, commonly accepted computer programs is required. The incumbent must also have excellent time management and organizational skills.
The incumbent must be able to pass a criminal background check prior to assuming job duties.
Incumbents must have the ability to:

- Interpret rules and regulations; follow and communicate all Aquarium safety protocols, policies and procedures.

- Remain current in First aid and CPR. (Courses are offered at the Aquarium).
- Respond in a calm manner in the event of an emergency.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position typically works between the hours of 5:30 p.m. - 10:00 a.m. The work involves walking through the Aquarium during the evening and night-time hours, both inside and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Requirements also include being able to climb stairs and lift up to 50 pounds if needed. The incumbent may sleep when the group that they are interacting with is asleep, but must be able to awake and tend to the needs of any member of the group at any time during the night. The Aquarium provides an air mattress and/or sleeping pad for each staff member, but other sleeping supplies are not provided.
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:
This position is an adjunct position that is irregular in nature. Staff members are not guaranteed any specific number of hours or events per pay period. Staff must work a minimum of one sleepover event every two months to remain active unless otherwise excused. Mandatory paid training sessions are scheduled 1-2 times per year.
