The Drafter / Estimator is responsible for transforming structural drawings into accurate material takeoffs, fabrication drawings, and competitive project estimates. This position serves as the bridge between engineering, fabrication, and project management, ensuring every project is accurately planned before production begins.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, working with numbers and technical drawings, and helping build high-quality structural steel projects from concept through fabrication.
Primary ResponsibilitiesEstimating
- Review structural and architectural drawings, specifications, and bid documents.
- Perform accurate material quantity takeoffs.
- Estimate labor, fabrication, welding, coatings, freight, erection, and subcontractor costs.
- Request and evaluate supplier quotes.
- Help Prepare competitive bid proposals.
- Identify scope gaps, exclusions, and potential risks.
- Assist with value engineering opportunities.
- Track bid results and continuously improve estimating accuracy.
Drafting
- Produce fabrication and shop drawings using Fusion or other approved software.
- Create detailed connection and assembly drawings.
- Generate bolt lists, material lists, and cut lists.
- Coordinate with engineers and project managers to resolve drawing conflicts.
- Revise drawings based on RFIs, engineering changes, and field conditions.
- Ensure drawings meet AISC standards and project specifications.
Project Support
- Participate in project handoff meetings.
- Organize project documentation.
- Assist with purchasing material when needed.
- Coordinate with shop personnel regarding fabrication questions.
- Support project managers throughout fabrication and installation.
- Help maintain drawing revisions and project records.
QualificationsRequired
- Ability to read structural and architectural drawings.
- Strong math and spatial reasoning skills.

- Excellent organization and time management.
- Proficiency with CAD software
- Strong written and verbal communication.
Preferred
- Experience with Takeoff software.
- Experience estimating structural steel or miscellaneous metals.
- Knowledge of welding and steel fabrication practices.
- Familiarity with AISC standards.
- Construction or fabrication industry experience.
