Hourly Contract ASL Instructor – St. Mark Lutheran School

Sign Language Hub is seeking an engaging and dependable American Sign Language instructor to teach weekly, in-person after-school ASL classes at St. Mark Lutheran School in Houston, Texas, during the Fall 2026 semester.
The instructor will teach students from Pre-K through eighth grade in three age-based groups. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with children and can provide interactive, age-appropriate instruction through games, movement, visual activities, cultural learning, and conversational ASL.
Schedule
Program Length: 8 weeks
Program Dates: September–November 2026
Location: St. Mark Lutheran School, Houston, TX
Mondays
- Pre-K3–Pre-K4: 3:00–3:30 p.m.
- Bridge–5th Grade: 3:30–4:00 p.m.
Wednesdays
- 6th–8th Grade: 3:30–4:30 p.m.
Instructional Dates
Mondays: September 14, 21 and 28; October 5, 12, 19 and 26; November 2
Wednesdays: September 16, 23 and 30; October 7, 14, 21 and 28; November 4
Make-up dates: November 9 and November 16 may be used as designated make-up dates.
Applicants must be available for the complete Monday and Wednesday schedule and commit to the full eight-week program.
Responsibilities
- Teach engaging and age-appropriate ASL lessons using curriculum guidelines and lesson plans provided by Sign Language Hub.
- Adapt activities for different ages, grade levels, and learning styles.
- Introduce students to ASL vocabulary, basic conversation, Deaf culture, and visual communication.
- Prepare and organize materials for interactive classroom activities.
- Maintain a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
- Manage attendance and communicate regularly with the Sign Language Hub program team.
- Communicate any classroom concerns, student needs, or scheduling issues promptly.
- Follow all school policies, safety procedures, and classroom expectations.
- Complete all required onboarding, background checks, training, and school clearance requirements before beginning the position.
Required Qualifications
- Fluency or strong proficiency in American Sign Language.
- Experience teaching or working with children.
- Ability to work effectively with students ranging from Pre-K through eighth grade.
- Strong classroom-management, communication, and organizational skills.
- Reliable transportation to St. Mark Lutheran School in Houston.
- Dependability and availability for the full Fall 2026 program.
- Willingness to complete any fingerprinting, background check, training, certification, or clearance required by the school.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience teaching ASL in a school or after-school setting.
- Experience working with young children and middle-school students.
- Experience working in a private, faith-based, or Lutheran school.
- Teaching certification, ASL credential, educational certification, or another relevant professional credential.
Deaf, hard-of-hearing, CODA, and hearing ASL professionals are encouraged to apply.
Compensation
$30-$50 per paid hour, based on experience and qualifications.
Preparation time and the total number of paid weekly hours should be added here once confirmed.
