Position Summary
This position will be located at the Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island, near Savannah, Ga. The Center provides hands-on, feet-in approach to teaching marine science and coastal ecology field and laboratory education programs. Audience includes PK-12 students and teachers, summer campers, undergraduates, and the public.
UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant are units of Public Service and Outreach at the University of Georgia, supporting Georgia’s short- and long-term prosperity.
This position serves as food prep and service worker for meals ( breakfast, lunch, and dinner) served to student and university groups (up to 80 individuals per meal) participating in education programs at the Marine Education Center and Aquarium. Adheres to set guidelines, policies, and time schedules set by direct supervisor, Chef Manager. Works with a professional and welcoming attitude and adheres to procedures on quality, portion control and presentation and excellent customer service.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Proven work experience as a food service worker or similar role
- Work experience in preparing, cooking, and serving food in a foodservice operation.
- Completion of the provided training program
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Basic mathematical skills
- Proficient understanding of food allergies and modified diets
- Proven ability to work in the higher education or K-12 environment
- Ability to work a flexible schedule to include nights and weekends
- Proven food preparation competency
Physical Demands:
- Lift 50 pounds.
- Stand for long periods of time
- Work in high heat area
- Driving to perform job related duties
Duties and responsibilities:
Prepares and serves meals to visiting student and university groups.
- Assists with kitchen duties including food preparation, portioning, and basic cooking as needed.
- Sets up and maintains the dining area before, during, and after meal service.
- Provides friendly and professional service to students, staff, and guests while responding to cafeteria needs.
- Follows all safety, sanitation, and health regulations and standards.
- Keeps the kitchen, dining room, restroom, and work areas clean and organized.
- Restocks food, beverages, and supplies as needed throughout the day.
- Performs job responsibilities with minimal supervision
- Assist with receiving, storing, and rotating food and supplies using proper food safety procedures.
- Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment and ensure they are properly stored
- Assists with daily kitchen operations, including food preparation, meal service, cleaning, stocking, and other duties as assigned to support the overall food service operation.
Typical hours are 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., depending on the volume and operational needs of the cafeteria. The position may also necessitate occasional evening and weekend shifts.
