Position Summary
Do you have the technical expertise to maintain the critical facilities that support Mecklenburg County's essential public services?
Mecklenburg County is seeking a highly skilled Facilities Technician II to perform advanced maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance across a diverse portfolio of County-owned facilities. Unlike positions primarily assigned to the County’s Boydton Campus, this position will primarily support the County's remote facilities, including Emergency Medical Services (EMS) stations, the County Landfill, convenience centers, and other off-site locations, while assisting with campus facilities as operational needs require.
The Facilities Technician II serves as an experienced maintenance professional capable of working independently while performing skilled work involving HVAC systems, plumbing, refrigeration equipment, mechanical systems, and general facility maintenance in commercial and industrial environments. This position plays a critical role in ensuring County facilities remain safe, functional, and operational for employees and the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Serve as the primary maintenance technician for off-site County facilities, including EMS stations, the County Landfill, convenience centers, and other remote locations.
· Assess off-site County facilities and building systems and develop a work plan for short-, medium-, and long-term capital replacements and enhancements that enhance facility efficiency, safety, and longevity.
· Perform advanced maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of County facilities and building systems.
· Diagnose and repair plumbing systems, HVAC equipment, refrigeration systems, and mechanical building components.
· Perform preventive maintenance to maximize equipment reliability and reduce downtime.
· Complete assigned work orders accurately and efficiently while maintaining maintenance records.
· Inspect facilities to identify maintenance deficiencies, safety hazards, and repair needs.
· Coordinate repairs with contractors, vendors, and County departments when specialized services are required.
· Operate tools, equipment, and machinery safely.
· Respond to urgent maintenance issues and facility emergencies as needed.
· Maintain compliance with OSHA standards, safety regulations, and applicable building codes.
· Assist with maintenance projects at the Boydton Campus and other County facilities when operational needs require.
Minimum Qualifications
· High school diploma or GED required.
· Three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in commercial or industrial facilities maintenance. A degree or certificate in a building or facilities maintenance or related career studies program can substitute for work experience.
· Demonstrated experience performing plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, and general building maintenance.
· Valid Virginia driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
· Ability to independently diagnose maintenance issues and determine appropriate corrective action.
Preferred Qualifications
· EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Certification.
· Journeyman or Master certification in HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, or another skilled trade.
· Experience maintaining commercial HVAC systems.
· Experience working in large industrial, municipal, or public-sector facilities.
· Experience utilizing computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
· Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and preventive maintenance practices.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
· Advanced knowledge of commercial building maintenance systems.
· Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, refrigeration, and mechanical systems.
· Ability to troubleshoot complex maintenance problems independently.
· Ability to read equipment manuals, blueprints, and technical specifications.
· Strong organizational and time-management skills.
· Ability to prioritize multiple work orders across several County locations.
· Excellent communication and customer service skills.
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Work Environment
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and includes travel between multiple County facilities. Duties may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, industrial environments, mechanical and electrical systems, and physically demanding work, including lifting, climbing, bending, operating tools and equipment, and working around heavy machinery.
