Industrial Superintendent – Confidential Search
Location: Central Alabama
Relocation: Must currently reside in Alabama OR be willing to relocate
Travel: Required based on project needs
Job Description
Summit Search Partners is conducting a confidential search for an experienced, hands-on Industrial Superintendent for an established industrial maintenance and field services company.
This is not a trailer-only superintendent position.
We are looking for a true field leader who understands project management but leads from the field. This person needs to understand manpower, scheduling, productivity, costs, customer expectations, safety, equipment, materials, and overall project execution—while remaining directly involved with the crews performing the work.
The right candidate has come up through the field, understands industrial mechanical work, knows what good production looks like, and can recognize when a job is getting off track before it becomes a larger problem.
When necessary, this Superintendent needs to be willing to put on PPE, grab tools, work alongside the crew, and do whatever it takes to safely get the project across the finish line.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of day-to-day field execution from mobilization through project completion
- Lead foremen, general foremen, millwrights, mechanics, welders, helpers, operators, subcontractors, and other field personnel
- Understand the complete scope of work and develop an effective execution plan
- Coordinate manpower, equipment, tools, materials, and work areas
- Develop daily and short-term schedules to support overall project milestones
- Work closely with Project Management on schedule, costs, manpower, productivity, and customer expectations
- Understand labor budgets and recognize when production or manpower is not tracking correctly
- Identify delays and problems early and drive solutions
- Hold foremen and crews accountable for productivity, safety, quality, attendance, and performance
- Track field progress and maintain accurate daily documentation
- Coordinate multiple crews and scopes of work
- Recognize additional work and communicate potential scope changes
- Maintain a professional relationship with plant management and customer representatives
This Is a Hands-On Leadership Role
We are specifically looking for someone who is comfortable getting directly involved in the work.
You should be capable of:
- Walking the job and knowing what your crews are working on
- Recognizing whether work is being performed correctly and efficiently
- Troubleshooting mechanical and installation problems
- Helping foremen develop better execution plans
- Teaching and mentoring less experienced employees
- Identifying poor workmanship or inefficient work practices
- Understanding when a crew needs additional manpower—and when it doesn't
- Stepping into the work when necessary to help solve a problem
- Leading from the front instead of managing from a truck, trailer, or phone
Industrial Experience
Strong experience in one or more of the following is highly preferred:
- Mining & aggregates
- Cement & lime
- Power generation
- Manufacturing
- Recycling
- Refineries/process facilities
- Material-handling facilities
- Heavy industrial maintenance
- Plant outages and shutdowns
- Industrial construction and installation
Mechanical Knowledge
Candidates should have strong working knowledge of equipment and systems such as:
- Conveyors
- Crushers
- Screens
- Feeders
- Pumps
- Gearboxes
- Bearings
- Motors
- Pulleys
- Chutes
- Structural steel
- Industrial piping
- Material-handling systems
- Mechanical installations and repairs
We're looking for someone who doesn't simply recognize this equipment.
You should understand how it comes apart, how it goes together, how it should operate, and how to troubleshoot it when something isn't right.
Project Management Mindset
Although this position is heavily field-focused, you must understand the business side of project execution.
That includes:
- Project scope
- Labor budgets
- Manpower planning
- Labor productivity
- Scheduling
- Equipment utilization
- Material requirements
- Subcontractor coordination
- Change orders
- Additional work
- Customer expectations
- Documentation
- Cost awareness
- Quality control
- Project profitability
Every labor hour, equipment hour, delay, and productivity issue impact the project.
The goal isn't simply to finish the work.
The goal is to complete it safely, correctly, efficiently, on schedule, and profitably.
Ideal Background
We're especially interested in candidates who have worked their way up through the field into leadership.
Previous experience may include:
- Industrial Superintendent
- Mechanical Superintendent
- Millwright Superintendent
- General Foreman
- Foreman
- Lead Millwright
- Industrial Mechanic
- Field Supervisor
Strong candidates should have proven experience leading industrial crews, planning work, troubleshooting mechanical problems, reading prints and drawings, managing manpower, and executing outages, shutdowns, maintenance projects, or industrial installations.
The Person We're Looking For
We want a field leader, problem solver, and builder.
You should be able to walk onto a project, understand the scope, determine the manpower required, organize the crews, coordinate equipment and tools, establish the sequence of work, and drive execution.
You should know when 10 people are doing the work of 5—and when 5 people are being asked to do the work of 10.
You should be able to recognize when something isn't being installed correctly, when a crew doesn't have the right tools, when productivity is falling behind, or when the sequence of work needs to change.
Most importantly, when the project gets difficult, you need to be the person the crew looks to for leadership.
When everyone else is discussing the problem, you're already working toward the solution.
Location & Travel Requirements
Candidates must currently reside in Alabama or Tennessee OR be willing to relocate to Alabama or Tennessee.
Travel and extended hours may be required depending on projects, outages, shutdowns, and customer needs.
