Overview
I am looking for a part-time teacher to provide one-to-one academic instruction in our home, two to three days a week. The focus is foundational reading and math taught through a structured literacy approach. His primary program is MindPlay, which is built on the Orton-Gillingham method. You would lead his sessions, teach and reinforce skills directly, and keep him engaged and regulated throughout. This is hands-on teaching, not screen supervision.
What you would do
- Deliver one-to-one reading and math instruction in short blocks of about twenty to twenty-five minutes, with movement breaks between them.
- Teach and reinforce reading through a structured, explicit literacy approach. Experience teaching decoding and phonological skills is essential.
- Follow and protect his routine and supports, including his visual schedule, FM listening system, fidget and calming tools, and his self-regulation system.
- Understand that his scripting is a form of communication and self-regulation rather than a behavior to correct, and respond to it supportively.
- Notice early when he needs a break or a calming strategy, and respond before he becomes overwhelmed.
- Keep brief notes on what he is working on and how he is progressing, so we can adjust the plan together.
Schedule
- Two to three days a week. The full schedule is still to be determined and will be set together.
- Instruction is delivered in short blocks with movement breaks in between, not screen time.
What I am looking for
- Training in Orton-Gillingham, or a strong understanding of the science of reading, strongly preferred.
- Real experience supporting autistic students and students with ADHD and language-based learning differences.
- A patient, strengths-based approach that assumes competence and builds genuine rapport.
- Reliable, consistent, and comfortable teaching in a family home.
Requirements
- A current, valid Florida teaching certificate is required.
- A current CV or resume. There is no application form for this position.
- A background check is required and will be paid for by the family.
Compensation
This position is funded through the student's Family Empowerment Scholarship for Students with Unique Abilities (FES-UA), administered by Step Up for Students. Compensation is based on your experience and certification and will be discussed directly. For the scholarship to pay you, you may need to register as an approved provider with Step Up for Students, and I am glad to walk you through that process.
To apply
Please email a current CV or resume to [email protected], along with a short note about your experience with structured literacy and with autistic learners. Thank you for considering this opportunity to work with a wonderful young person.
