JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Assistant Coach, Speech and Debate
REPORTS TO: Head Coach and Fine Arts Department Chair
DESCRIPTION: We are looking for dedicated assistant coaches for the Speech and Debate team. The
team competes in all forms of Speech and Debate at a local, regional, and national level, and is organized by
the following principles:
1. Education: Speech and Debate is an educational activity, and we will always seek to develop, refine,
and implement best practices to help our students learn and grow.
2. Inclusion: The Speech and Debate team should reflect our student population. We will work to create
and maintain an open, inclusive, and safe space for all students.
3. Student Leadership: Speech and Debate empowers students by helping them find their voice. We will
structure our team and our decision-making process such that students are involved and empowered.
4. Fun: The Speech and Debate team should be an enjoyable experience for students. We will create a
relaxed, inviting space that recruits and retains students on its own.
5. Competitive Excellence: We will encourage students to aim for the highest levels of success. We will
facilitate local, state, and national competitive excellence.
QUALIFICATIONS: We are looking to hire several assistants, and our coaches may be asked to fill many
different roles. Candidates should possess some combination of the following characteristics:
1. Superior communication and management skills.
2. The ability to accept and implement feedback in a collaborative coaching environment.
3. Excellent relationships with students.
4. Experience as a competitor or coach in speech and/or debate events.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Each assistant coach position may vary based on the candidates
experience level, availability, and ambition. Some of the responsibilities our current assistants manage include:
1. Plan and run one to three practices a week.
2. Track and measure student progress throughout the year.
3. Communicate regularly with students and other coaches about practices, tournaments, and team
issues.
4. Regularly attend tournaments to judge and coach.
5. Assist with team functions, such as hosting tournaments, teem meetings, and team social events.
