Job Summary
Under the direction of a Registered Nurse or licensed healthcare provider, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct nursing care within the scope of practice defined by the Ohio Revised Code. The LPN delivers quality patient care, administers medications and treatments, maintains accurate documentation, and assists with emergency response while ensuring compliance with facility policies and healthcare regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer nursing care, medications, oxygen therapy, and treatments within the LPN scope of practice.
- Administer oral, topical, rectal, intramuscular (IM), and subcutaneous (SQ) medications, including controlled substances, as prescribed.
- Perform nursing procedures including catheter insertion, gastrostomy tube reinsertion, wound care, suctioning, specimen collection, dialysis assistance, and patient monitoring.
- Assist physicians during examinations, treatments, diagnostic procedures, and laboratory testing.
- Respond to medical emergencies by providing first aid, CPR, emergency interventions, and patient restraint when necessary.
- Monitor, assess, document, and report patient conditions, treatment responses, medication reactions, and behavioral changes.
- Maintain medication accountability, prepare and count medications, and ensure proper inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
- Provide direct patient care including vital signs, hygiene assistance, activities of daily living (ADLs), repositioning, topical medication administration, and patient transport.
- Schedule medical appointments, escort patients, and assist with therapeutic, recreational, and one-on-one activities according to treatment plans.
- Provide guidance, orientation, and support to lower-level healthcare staff while participating in interdisciplinary meetings, staff training, and nursing conferences.
- Order medications and medical supplies and maintain cleanliness and organization of medication rooms, carts, and nursing stations.
- Perform basic clerical duties including answering phones, filing, and maintaining accurate patient records.
Required Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of licensed practical nursing procedures, pharmacology, patient care, CPR, first aid, and general clinical practices.
Familiarity with HIPAA regulations, documentation standards, inventory control, and infection prevention practices.
Ability to safely operate medical equipment including oxygen equipment, blood pressure monitors, dialysis equipment, respirators, sterilizers, and hypodermic devices.
Strong assessment, communication, critical thinking, and emergency response skills.
Ability to establish positive relationships with patients and healthcare team members while providing compassionate, professional care.
