Why does the job exist?
The primary purpose of this position is to provide leadership and supervision to ten (10) FTEs within the Retirement Benefits Unit. This unit serves to counsel members on their options for retirement and to ensure that members retirement benefits are processed timely and accurately in accordance with New Mexico State Rules and Statute.
How does it get done?
This position serves to ensure that benefits staff provide excellent customer service without fail, remains flexible, adapt to changes, provide quality and timely work product, and continue to expand their job knowledge as it relates to their areas of expertise. This position requires problem solving and thorough knowledge of retirement eligibility, guidance, regulations, state statutes, plan applicability, employer responsibilities, IRS and legal requirements. This position must make well-informed, effective, timely decisions, required to accomplish the task at hand, and must communicate clearly and present points-of-view in a clear, convincing manner.

Minimum Qualification
Associate's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, or Accounting and four (4) years of direct job experience in retirement processing, benefits administration, and/or auditing. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
