ABOUT THIS POSITION

In 2025, approximately 52 million passengers traveled through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the country and a key hub in the nation's 5th largest city. Sky Harbor is the largest of three airports in the Phoenix Airport System (Phoenix Sky Harbor, Deer Valley, and Goodyear), operated by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department. Together, these airports generate an impressive $44 billion annual economic impact.

The Chief Construction Inspector in the Aviation Department inspects construction projects such as runways, taxiways, streets, bridges, traffic signals, water and sewer mains, commercial buildings, and other specialized projects for compliance with standard and special specifications, details, plans, and standard construction practices. Duties involve planning and project management, temporary traffic control, plan review, and supervising project sites.

Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
Knowledge of working with municipal work environment.
Knowledge of planning, project management, and plan review.
Knowledge of airport runways, taxiways, commercial and industrial buildings.

SALARY

Pay Range: $35.08 to $47.01 per hour.

Hiring Range: $35.08 to $44.77 per hour.

Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 255. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Five years of experience in field engineering work, including one year of technical and skilled public works construction inspection experience (or one year at the level of Senior Construction Inspector).
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
Working conditions:
- Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
- Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
- Requires walking for prolonged periods which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

Experience with mechanical and plumbing.
Experience in plan reviews for future projects.
Experience with electrical and structural engineering.
Experience with commercial & industrial buildings.
Experience in construction in an airport environment.
Experience in temporary traffic control and barricading.
Professional certifications applicable to the position, preferred.
