Position Overview
We are seeking qualified and certified Pharmacy Technicians to provide critical support to the Orlando VA Healthcare System (OVAHCS). Due to a current shortage, the selected candidates will join a state-of-the-art medical treatment facility to furnish exceptional pharmacy services to eligible Department of Veterans Affairs beneficiaries.
The standard of care provided must meet or exceed recognized national standards. This position is vital to ensuring our nation’s Veterans receive accurate, safe, and timely pharmaceutical care.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Prescription Processing: Perform onsite pharmacy technician duties, including reading, interpreting, and processing prescriptions safely and accurately under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
- Compounding & Dispensing: Count, measure, and compound medications (sterile and/or non-sterile, depending on specific assignment) in compliance with VA regulations and national safety standards.
- Inventory Management: Assist with stock control, inventory rotation, identifying expiring medications, and maintaining proper storage conditions for all pharmaceuticals.
- Customer & Veteran Service: Interact professionally with Veterans, care providers, and medical staff to answer general pharmacy inquiries, resolve routine issues, and facilitate prescription refills/pick-ups.
- Data Entry & Compliance: Utilize the VA’s electronic health record systems to enter prescription data, update patient profiles, and maintain strict confidentiality in alignment with HIPAA regulations.
- Quality Assurance: Adhere strictly to the quality, safety, and operational standards established by the facility and national certifying bodies.
Required Qualifications & Education
To be considered for this position, candidates must possess at least one of the following active, national certifications:
- PTCB: Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, or
- NHA: Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT) issued by the National Healthcareer Association.
Additional Requirements:
- Experience: Minimum of 1–2 years of experience working as a Pharmacy Technician (experience in a hospital, outpatient clinical setting, or VA facility is highly preferred).
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduate of an accredited pharmacy technician training program is a plus.
- Skills: * Strong knowledge of medical terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, and generic/brand drug names.
- Proficiency with pharmacy software and basic computer applications.
- Excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to serving the Veteran community.
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen (required for VA network access and background clearance).
- Screening: Must be able to successfully pass a federal background check, drug screening, and credentialing process (VetPro).
Work Environment
- This position is 100% onsite at a state-of-the-art VA medical treatment facility.
- May require standing for long periods, light lifting of pharmacy supplies, and working standard shifts (which may include days, evenings, or rotating weekends based on VA hospital needs).
