Columbia Building Services is seeking an experienced Business Applications Developer & Systems Analyst to join our team in Northeast Minneapolis, MN.
This is a unique opportunity for a developer who enjoys solving business problems, supporting critical systems, and improving technology solutions that directly impact daily operations.
The successful candidate will work closely with our current developer during a structured transition period to learn our existing applications, processes, and business systems. Following the transition, this individual will take ownership of maintaining, supporting, and enhancing Columbia Building Services' internal applications while leading the long-term modernization of our business systems.
While our current applications are built primarily in Microsoft Access and VBA, we are seeking someone who can not only support these systems but also help guide their evolution to a modern technology platform over time.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys understanding how a business operates, building relationships with users, and creating practical technology solutions that improve efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance existing Microsoft Access applications.
- Develop and modify VBA code, forms, reports, queries, and database functionality.
- Write and optimize SQL queries and maintain relational databases.
- Support internal business applications related to operations, estimating, work orders, billing, accounting, scheduling, inventory management, and reporting.
- Work directly with employees to understand business needs, troubleshoot issues, and provide user support and training.
- Analyze business processes and identify opportunities for automation and efficiency improvements.
- Design, test, document, and deploy application enhancements.
- Maintain technical documentation, system architecture, and version control.
- Troubleshoot Windows application environments and software dependencies.
- Develop a long-term roadmap for migrating legacy Microsoft Access applications to a modern, scalable business application platform.
- Recommend and implement technology solutions that improve reliability, usability, and business performance.
Required Qualifications
- Strong experience developing Microsoft Access applications.
- Advanced proficiency with VBA programming.
- Strong understanding of SQL and relational databases.
- Experience maintaining and troubleshooting existing business applications.
- Ability to analyze business processes and translate operational needs into technical solutions.
- Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical users.
- Ability to work independently and manage business-critical systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting legacy business applications.
- Experience migrating or modernizing legacy software applications.
- Experience with SQL Server or other enterprise database platforms.
- Experience with modern development platforms such as .NET, C#, Power Apps, web-based applications, or similar technologies.
- Experience with accounting, billing, estimating, inventory, operations, or ERP-related systems.
- Experience documenting systems and creating deployment procedures.
- Experience providing end-user training and technical support.

Position Details
- Location: Northeast Minneapolis, MN
- Schedule: Part-time, approximately 16–24 hours per week with a flexible schedule
- Work Arrangement: Primarily onsite during training and transition, with the opportunity for a hybrid schedule after onboarding
- Compensation: $45 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience
