Massage Therapy Instructor
About Alva
Alva Beauty Collective is a BPPE-approved private postsecondary beauty school with campuses in Lemon Grove and Chula Vista. We train students in Cosmetology, Barbering, Esthetics, Manicuring, Fashion Makeup Artistry, and Massage Therapy through a hybrid in-person and online model, in both English and Spanish. Our approach is technique-first: students learn a specific, repeatable standard of hands-on work, then build speed, confidence, and professionalism on top of it.
Position Summary
The Massage Therapy Instructor delivers Alva's 500-hour Massage Therapy program — teaching theory and hands-on technique, supervising students during client services, and running the classroom and clinic floor with independence. This is a leadership role as much as a teaching role. You will manage a room of students working at different levels at the same time, keep the day on schedule, and hold every student to the same technique standard.
Key ResponsibilitiesInstruction
- Teach massage theory and hands-on technique according to Alva's curriculum, rubrics, and established Alva techniques — not a personal or improvised syllabus
- Deliver visual, engaging lessons using slideshows, online video and reference material, an iPad, and live demonstration
- Adapt instruction for students at multiple levels in the same room, and for both English- and Spanish-speaking learners as applicable
- Evaluate practical skills against the program rubric and document results accurately and on time
- Provide clear, specific, corrective feedback students can act on immediately
Clinic and Client Supervision
- Supervise students performing massage services on live clients, maintaining safety, draping standards, sanitation, and professional conduct at all times
- Review client intake forms with students, confirm contraindications are identified before service begins, and ensure documentation is complete
- Step in to correct technique, body mechanics, or client communication in real time without disrupting the client experience
Classroom Leadership and Operations
- Take command of the classroom: set the tone, manage behavior and attendance, and keep the schedule moving
- Track and record student hours and progress accurately in accordance with school and CAMTC requirements
- Send and respond to routine email daily — students, staff, and administration
- Open and/or close the campus independently, including securing the building, equipment, and supplies
- Maintain the classroom and clinic space, linens, tables, and product inventory
Team and Problem Solving
- Anticipate and resolve issues on the floor — scheduling conflicts, no-show clients, supply shortages, student conflicts — without waiting for direction
- Coordinate with campus management, admissions, and other instructors; communicate issues early
- Support school events, open houses, and program promotion as needed
Required Qualifications
- Current CAMTC certification in good standing (certification number required)
- Verifiable massage therapy training and professional hands-on experience
- Comfortable and competent with everyday technology: internet research, building and presenting slideshows, using an iPad for instruction and record-keeping, and email
- Able to work independently and close the campus alone
- Strong classroom presence — able to lead, redirect, and hold a group's attention
- Excellent organization and the ability to manage several responsibilities at once
- Professional written and verbal communication
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience in a school, spa, or clinical setting
- Bilingual English/Spanish (preferable but not required)
- Experience supervising a student clinic or working spa floor
Competencies We're Looking For
- Leader. You run the room. Students know what is expected and follow it.
- Problem solver. You handle what comes up and bring solutions, not just problems.
- Team player. You back up your colleagues and communicate proactively.
- Multitasker. You can supervise clients, coach a struggling student, and answer an email in the same hour without dropping any of them.
- Standard-holder. You teach Alva technique to the rubric, consistently, for every student.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, demonstrate massage technique, and remain on the floor for extended periods
- Ability to lift and move massage tables, linens, and supplies (approximately [25] lbs)
- Ability to bend, kneel, and demonstrate proper body mechanics
Schedule
Monday, Wednesday, Friday 5pm - 9pm
Compensation and Benefits
$22 per hour
