BDI Marine Contractors, LLC is seeking an experienced Underground Drainage & Utility Foreman to lead field crews on heavy civil, underground utility, storm drainage, and sitework projects.
This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for coordinating daily field operations, directing crews, maintaining production, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project plans and specifications.
The ideal candidate has strong experience with underground drainage and utility installation and is comfortable reading plans, establishing grades, coordinating equipment and manpower, and leading crews in an active construction environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise field crews performing underground drainage, utility, excavation, and sitework operations.
- Coordinate daily manpower, equipment, materials, and production activities.
- Install and oversee installation of storm drainage systems, underground piping, structures, catch basins, manholes, and related infrastructure.
- Perform and supervise trenching, excavation, bedding, pipe installation, backfilling, compaction, and grading.
- Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, elevations, and utility layouts.
- Establish and verify grades, elevations, slopes, and pipe alignment.
- Coordinate closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, operators, subcontractors, inspectors, and other trades.
- Plan daily work activities and communicate expectations clearly to the crew.
- Ensure work is completed according to project plans, specifications, schedules, and quality standards.
- Monitor crew productivity and identify opportunities to improve efficiency.
- Ensure proper use of equipment, tools, and materials.
- Conduct daily pre-task planning, toolbox talks, and job hazard assessments.
- Enforce company safety policies and OSHA requirements at all times.
- Maintain proper trench safety, excavation protection, access, and competent-person requirements.
- Identify conflicts with existing utilities or site conditions and communicate issues promptly to project leadership.
- Coordinate inspections and assist with testing requirements as needed.
- Maintain accurate daily documentation including manpower, production quantities, equipment, deliveries, and jobsite conditions.
- Train and mentor crew members and help develop future field leaders.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional jobsite.
- Assist with layout and field problem-solving as conditions change.
- Take ownership of assigned work from initial layout through final completion.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of underground utility, drainage, or heavy civil construction experience preferred.
- Previous experience as a Foreman, Lead, or senior crew member strongly preferred.
- Strong experience installing storm drainage, underground utilities, pipe, structures, manholes, and catch basins.
- Experience with excavation, trenching, backfill, compaction, and grading operations.
- Ability to read and understand civil construction plans and specifications.
- Ability to understand elevations, grades, slopes, and pipe profiles.
- Familiarity with lasers, grade rods, levels, and other construction layout tools.
- Knowledge of OSHA excavation and trench-safety requirements.
- Ability to effectively lead and motivate a construction crew.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound field decisions.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Reliable transportation required.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and jobsite conditions.
