The CalSTRS Technology Services Branch is seeking a motivated individual to work as an Information Technology Specialist I in the IT Infrastructure & Operations Division on the IT Infrastructure/Network Infrastructure Team.
The IT Infrastructure and Operations Division manages the core technology infrastructure needed to support the CalSTRS business. This infrastructure includes client technology; network, servers, and storage infrastructure; and technology disaster recovery. The IT Infrastructure and Operations Division also provides technology related operational support for CalSTRS and is comprised of the following team: Client Technology Infrastructure, Audiovisual Services, Client Technology Services, Technology Disaster Recovery, Network Infrastructure, Service Desk and System & Security Administration.
The Network Infrastructure team is responsible for designing, supporting, maintaining, upgrading, and documenting the server and storage infrastructure needed for both on and off premise business applications and systems. This infrastructure includes Hyper-V infrastructure, Active Directory (AD), Domain Name System (DNS), backup and recovery, server level Anti-Virus protection, and much more. The Network Infrastructure team serves a key role in working with different business areas in the organization as well as third party vendors on large and small projects.
Under direction of the IT Network Infrastructure Manager, the Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, in collaboration with other technical staff, designs, implements, and manages the cloud-based and on-premises infrastructure, as well as the server, storage, backups, patching, monitoring, technology implementation, and support activities. The Cloud Infrastructure Engineer has the knowledge, skills, and abilities in all aspects of centralized enterprise systems and applications in datacenter and multi-cloud server instances that provide services, including but not limited to, Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud hosting, public cloud infrastructure, Multifactor Authentication (MFA), Active Directory/Entra ID services, database services and web services. The Cloud Infrastructure Engineer performs a variety of tasks requiring innovative problem-solving within broadly stated and non-specific guidelines. This position is required to be on a rotational standby status during evenings, weekends, and holidays to provide after-hours support for mission critical systems. After-hours support rotations will be scheduled in advance as much as possible.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:-
Automation and scripting experience using PowerShell

System monitoring, alerting, and security hardening experience

Experience deploying and supporting production workloads in AWS and/or Microsoft Azure

Knowledge and experience with Virtualization technologies

Knowledge and experience with directory and authentication systems – Active Directory, Entra ID, SAML, OAuth

Experience supporting backup and recovery technologies

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

Technical Documentation and Process Improvement skills
Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.
In July 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025. This program reduces employees’ monthly base pay in exchange for paid leave credits. This position is subject to PLP 2025 and will have a monthly base pay reduction of 3% in exchange for 5 hours of leave credits for the duration of the program. The salary ranges shown on this job posting do not reflect the reduced amounts.

Working Conditions
CalSTRS offers a hybrid approach including in-office and remote work solutions based on busines needs.
All staff of CalSTRS are employees of the State of California and subject to California employment taxes and withholdings. Upon appointment, staff are required to provide a current California address to CalSTRS Human Resources to be used as a remote work location.
