Title: Registered Radiologic Technologist - CT and Diagnostic

PART ONE: Dimension and Description
Primary Purpose: To assist in patient care by providing high quality imaging services efficiently. Under the direction of the Medical Imaging Director and Radiologist, safely performs CT examinations, radiography, fluoroscopic and moderately invasive procedures, including surgery, emergency, pain management and portable radiography within the guidelines established in the policies and procedures manual. Works in accordance with JCAHO, state and other regulatory or accreditation agencies.
Formal Policy-Setting Responsibilities: Responsible for providing recommendations regarding policies and procedures associated with the job’s purpose and essential responsibilities.
Routine Decision Making: Determine if image quality is diagnostic; verify contrast dosage while working under approved protocols and supervision of the Radiologist; reviews physician orders vs diagnosis/reason for exam to ensure patients receive the right test at the right time.
Formal Supervisory Responsibility: No formal supervisory responsibility.
Required Knowledge: Patient care; patient satisfaction; sterile technique; equipment function; exam and positioning safety; radiation safety; quality control.
Required Skills and Ability: Ability to effectively, efficiently and safely use various types of radiography and CT equipment, up to and including DR, C-arm, RIS, EMR, PACS; proper image techniques; troubleshooting.
Unusual Working Conditions: Risk of exposure to radiation, heavy lifting, air and blood borne pathogens and bodily fluids.
Education and Certification/ Registration Required for the Position: Graduate of an accredited program by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program, American Medical Association or other accrediting agency; American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) certification and BLS required. CT registry or registry eligible with completion of examination within 6 months of hire to maintain employment. Minimum of one year experience preferred in Diagnostic Radiology and CT and/or completion of accredited Radiology program with clinical experience.
Age Specific Competencies: Provides care for birth to pediatric (birth-2 yrs.), pediatric/child patients between (2 yrs-12 yrs); adolescent patients between 12 to 18 years of age; adult patients between 18 to 64 years; and geriatric patients 65 years and older.
PART TWO: Essential Responsibilities and Tasks (90%)

Reviews physician order for accuracy and validity prior to the start of every procedure.
2. Produces diagnostic quality images that demonstrates proper positioning of patient and equipment, selecting adequate exposure factors to meet approval of the Radiologist while maintaining ALARA standards.
3. Completes procedures in a timeframe established by departmental policy and procedure.
4. Communicates procedure delays with clerical staff for efficient patient throughput.
5. Consistently practices the use of lead shielding on all patients when appropriate, except where area of concern is affected.
6. Consistently practices the use of immobilization devices for patient safety and diagnostic image quality.
7. Assists Radiologist in fluoroscopic procedures and documents fluoroscopy time on patients requisition and scans into PACS 100% of the time.
8. Verifies creatine, GFR and other exam specific contraindications prior to the injection of contrast.
9. Successfully starts IV and completes a point of care creatinine if applicable.
10. Consistently follows sterile technique when setting up sterile trays for moderately invasive procedures.
11. Completes required consents and time out processes for all moderately invasive procedures 100% of the time. Communicates all contraindications to radiologist and/or ordering physician prior to the procedure.
12. Completes all patient work sheets pertaining to CT procedures accurately and documents contrast usage for every examination 100% of the time.
13. Consistently follows all policies and procedures for radiation safety and wears lead apron when performing portable or C-Arm procedures in the Emergency Room, OR or Pain Clinic. Wears film badge 100% of the time.
14. Assists with the training and evaluation of Radiology students and new hires, as applicable.
15. Maintains an adequate number of supplies necessary to perform procedures and advises technologist and/or director if additional supplies and/or equipment is needed to perform a procedure.
16. Performs quality control on equipment and records results as mandated by JCAHO, ACR, state, and FDA.
17. Reports problems with equipment to the vendor or Medical Imaging Director within one hour in person, phone or email.
18. Correctly identifies, scans and annotates the anatomical side of interest 100% of the time in accordance with departmental policy and medical/legal requirements.
19. Validates all images are identified with the patient’s name and date of birth, date of service and unit number 100% of the time.
20. Provides documentation of detailed patient history to Radiologist in PACS 100% of the time.
21. Validates proper charging of exams based on examination performed and supplies used.
22. Submits every study for validation and efficient billing 100% of the time.
23. Contacts ordering physician for valid order and insurance authorization when Radiologist wants a different examination performed.
24. Actively participates in process improvement initiatives within the department.
