Position Overview
High Bluff Academy is seeking a dynamic, student-centered High School English Teacher to join our dedicated faculty. The ideal candidate will be passionate about literature, writing instruction, and critical thinking, and committed to preparing students for college-level academic success.
This position includes teaching English 11, English 12, AP English Language and Composition, and AP English Literature and Composition. Certified or willing to become certified to teach AP Seminar and AP Research is preferred but not required.
Primary Responsibilities
- Teach multiple sections of English 11 and English 12 to small class (<15 students per section)
- Teach AP English Language and AP English Literature courses aligned with College Board standards
- Design engaging, rigorous lesson plans that promote analytical reading, academic writing, and discussion
- Prepare students for AP examinations through effective instruction and assessment practices
- Provide timely and constructive feedback on student writing
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate effectively with families
- Collaborate with colleagues to strengthen curriculum and vertical alignment
- Contribute positively to the school community through advising, committees, or extracurricular involvement
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Literature, Education, or a related field
- Valid state teaching credential (or ability to obtain one)
- Experience teaching high school English
- Strong background in literary analysis, research, and composition instruction
- Excellent communication, organization, and classroom management skills
- Knowledge of and/or experience with technology used in modern classrooms
Preferred:
- Experience teaching AP English Language and/or AP English Literature
- Familiarity with College Board AP curriculum and scoring standards
- Experience with AP Seminar and/or AP Research
- Demonstrated success improving student writing outcomes
- Experience with Microsoft 365 for education
