The Town of Burns Harbor, IN is accepting applications for a fulltime Public Works Laborer. This position supports the safe, efficient, and well-maintained operation of the Town’s roads, public facilities, vehicles, equipment, sanitation systems, and stormwater infrastructure. This position performs general maintenance, seasonal services, snow and ice removal, landscaping, street and facility upkeep, and sanitation system inspections and maintenance. The role also supports MS4/stormwater permit compliance, including inspections, recordkeeping, stormwater system maintenance, and pollution prevention activities. The Public Works Laborer responds to emergencies and on-call needs, follows applicable safety and regulatory requirements, maintains accurate work records, and supports other Town departments as needed. The position works under the direction of the Public Works Superintendent and assists with additional duties assigned by Town leadership.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess a valid Indiana drivers license.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
- Must pass a pre-employment background check.

- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Be able to use the proper PPE when needed for certain tasks.
- Be able to do considerable heavy lifting, (up to 50-100 lbs. unaided).
- Shoveling and moving of materials requiring frequent exertion and strain.
- Be up for long periods of time, day and/or night.
- Moderate manual dexterity is required to sort materials and operate equipment.
Working Conditions
- This job requires a 40-hour work week.
- Work is performed primarily in office, vehicles, and outdoor settings, in all-weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during the day and night shifts.
- Subject to exposure to fumes, exhaust, noise, vibrations, dust or dirt. Exposure to dangerous conditions while performing road maintenance.
- Employees will be working with moving mechanical parts and in very precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
- Exposure to airborne particles, toxic, or caustic chemicals.
- Risk of electrical shock.
- Noise levels will typically be quiet in office settings.
- Noise levels will also be loud on constructions sites, lift stations, waste water plants, or even in a vehicle/garage.
- Uneven ground, wet/slick/hot surfaces may be present.
- Pinch points, tight spaces, heights can be seen in the scope of work.
Physical Requirements

- Required to work during snow and sewer emergencies, often being on-call for weekends, weekdays, and holidays per on-call schedule.
- Required to sit for long periods of time doing office duties, emails, and other town business.
- Must be able to wear steel toed boots, and other PPE, all day, every day.
- Must have good close/distant vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to hear equipment, alarms, or traffic.
- Strong hand-eye coordination for operating tools and machinery.
Pay: $19.66 - $23.02 per hour
