Position Summary
The Clinical Lab Associate (CLA) supports the daily operations of CLIA-certified laboratory by assisting in specimen receipt, accessioning, preparation, and data entry. The CLA ensures accurate sample tracking, maintains laboratory supplies, and provides technical support to scientists and clinical laboratory staff. This role is essential to maintaining workflow efficiency, regulatory compliance, and high-quality diagnostic services. The CLA will work closely with Clinical Laboratory Scientists, R&D scientists, and quality teams to ensure timely processing of patient samples and seamless coordination across SHK’s testing operations.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Specimen Receipt & Accessioning
- Receives, logs, and tracks incoming specimens
- Performs visual inspection to assess specimen integrity and acceptability
- Accurately enters specimen and patient data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and tracking systems
- Labels and prepares specimens in accordance with established procedures
Specimen Handling & Processing
- Performs pre-analytical processing including aliquoting, labeling, and preparation
- Ensures proper specimen handling, storage, and transport conditions
- Maintains specimen traceability throughout the workflow
- Identifies and escalates unacceptable or compromised specimens
Laboratory Operations Support
- Maintains cleanliness and organization of laboratory work areas
- Sanitizes workstations and ensures compliance with safety and infection control procedures
- Restocks supplies and maintains inventory levels
- Assists with ordering and tracking laboratory supplies
Support of Testing Activities
- Assists licensed personnel with equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
- Supports workflow from pre-analytical through post-analytical phases
- Prepares materials and reagents as directed
- Provides operational support during testing activities as needed
Quality & Compliance Support
- Follows all laboratory SOPs, policies, and Quality Management System (QMS) requirements
- Assists with documentation and quality-related activities as assigned
- Participates in training and competency programs
- Identifies and reports non-conformances or process deviations
Communication & Coordination
- Supports supervisors in handling inquiries from internal teams
- Communicates specimen or workflow issues promptly
- Works collaboratively with laboratory staff to ensure efficient operations
Training & Development
- Participates in onboarding and training activities
- May assist in training new staff under supervisionMaintains required competency and training records
Qualifications:
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- A background in biology, healthcare, or laboratory sciences is a plus but not required.
Experience
- Previous experience in a laboratory or healthcare setting is preferred, but not required.
- Strong data entry skills and familiarity with computer systems is required.
- Previous experience working in a fast-paced team environment is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in data entry and specimen tracking.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and implement established procedures.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to communicate clearly with laboratory staff, supervisors, and cross-functional teams regarding specimen status, workflow issues, and operational need.
Position Type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Pay Range: $22-35 per hour (good faith estimate upon hire)
