Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced tax and accounting professional who is interested in helping lead and grow a small, client-focused tax and accounting firm. This is not simply a staff position. It is an opportunity for the right person to step into a meaningful leadership role, help shape the future of the firm, and potentially move toward a partnership or ownership-track position.
The ideal candidate is someone who understands small business owners, closely held companies, and entrepreneurs. This person must be able to meet directly with clients, understand their business concerns, provide practical guidance, and direct the work of bookkeeping, payroll, accounting, and tax preparation staff.
Trust, judgment, technical competence, and client service are critical.

Key Responsibilities
[Core accounting skills]
- Applying skillset to enhance current monthly close process
- Ability to write adjusting journal entries
- Sch C to S Corp transitions
- Fixed assets and lower of cost or FMV
- Proof of cash – understand and be able to do this
- QBO & QBD
- Financial statement analysis
- Chart of accounts – consistency, efficiency, setup
- KPIs – understanding of, as well as key ratios appropriate per industry
[Developing Client Relationships]
- Meet with small business owners and individual clients to understand their tax, accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, and business advisory needs.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to closely held businesses and entrepreneurial clients.
[Strategic Vision at Leadership Level]
- Identifying areas for internal enhancement
- Help improve internal systems, checklists, staff training, client communication, and workflow.
- Review and supervise bookkeeping, payroll, sales tax, financial statement, and income tax work prepared by staff.
- Assist in developing firm policies, client service standards, and future growth plans.
[Tax Planning/Advisory]
- Provide guidance on business structure, tax planning, entity compliance, reasonable compensation, owner distributions, and related small business issues.
- Strong experience in tax preparation, bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, and small business advisory work.
[Tax Preparation]
- Familiarity with preparation of 1040s, 1065s, 1120-S, 1120s, 1041s & 990s
[Tax Review]
- Review individual, corporate, S corporation, partnership, and trust tax returns.
Required Qualifications
- Four-year degree in accounting, business, or related field.
- Intermediate to advanced technical knowledge of individual and business taxation.
- Strong communication skills with business owners and staff.
- Practical understanding of entrepreneurs and closely held businesses.
- High level of integrity, discretion, and professional judgment.
- Experience with bookkeeping software, tax software, payroll systems, sales tax and small business compliance.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA license preferred, especially with Michigan and/or Ohio licensing.
- QuickBooks, Drake Tax, Patriot Software
- Experience working in a small tax or accounting firm.
- Prior management or client advisory experience.
- Ability to review and direct the work of others.

Pay: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
