Surgical Assistant (Certified) – Operating Room

The Surgical Assistant serves as a First or Second Assistant to the surgeon during complex and routine surgical and invasive procedures. This role supports the surgical team through all phases of care, ensuring a safe, efficient, and patient-centered operating room environment.

Provide first or second assist support for surgical procedures across all patient populations

Prepare operating rooms by gathering supplies, instruments, and equipment

Assist with patient positioning, transferring, prepping, and draping

Anticipate surgeon needs and ensure all required instruments and supplies are available prior to incision

Maintain sterile field and adhere to aseptic techniques

Ensure all surgical equipment is available, functional, and ready for use

Support training and onboarding of Surgical Technologists and new Surgical Assistants

Participate in department initiatives, quality improvement efforts, and team-based projects

Certified Surgical Assistant (or eligible to obtain certification within 30 days of hire)

Current CPR certification

High school diploma or equivalent required

Completion of an accredited Surgical Assistant program preferred

Previous operating room (OR) experience required

Schedule: Monday through Friday 11:00 am to 7:30 pm; including rotating call and holiday call - 30 minute call time required

Ability to work effectively in high-stress, fast-paced surgical environments

Strong critical thinking and ability to respond quickly in emergencies

Ability to adapt to changing clinical environments

Understanding of aseptic technique and sterile field maintenance

Ability to recognize and respond to the needs of diverse patient populations

Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance

Patient lifting over 35 pounds requires assistance and/or use of equipment
-
Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding work
-
Exposure to body fluids, waste, chemicals, radiation, anesthesia gases, hazardous materials, and infectious diseases

Participation in on-call rotation (nights, weekends, holidays) required

Ability to respond to emergency situations and facility codes (e.g., fire, evacuation)
