Support Vessels of Alaska operates dedicated research vessels supporting hydrographic, geophysical, environmental, and offshore marine projects throughout Alaska and the Pacific.
Our vessels are purpose-built research vessels equipped with:
- Stern A-frame
- Oceanographic and trawl winches
- Scientific lab space
- 24-hour operations capability
Projects include:
- Hydrographic and geophysical surveys
- Mooring deployment and recovery
- Environmental and oceanographic research
- Dive and ROV support
Position Summary
We are seeking a dependable Vessel Cook to join our crew aboard a working research vessel.
The Cook is responsible for planning, preparing, and serving nutritious, high-quality meals for crew and scientific personnel while maintaining a clean, organized, and efficient galley. This role plays a vital part in crew morale and daily vessel operations.
In addition to galley responsibilities, the Cook will occasionally assist with basic deck operations, vessel arrivals and departures, and safety drills as needed.
Primary Responsibilities
- Oversee the safe, efficient, and organized operation of the vessel's galley.
- Prepare and serve nutritious, high-quality, and well-balanced meals for crew and passengers while managing food costs responsibly.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and help coordinate the purchase of groceries, supplies, and galley equipment as needed.
- Participate in and oversee the thorough cleaning of the galley, storage areas, and all quarters.
- Inspect and perform proper maintenance of all galley equipment to ensure safe operation.
- Maintain accurate records of all stocks and supplies and ensure sufficient food stocks are maintained onboard the vessel.
- Follow approved menus while adapting to operational needs and dietary requirements when appropriate.
- Ensure that all precautions are taken to prevent contamination of food. This includes proper thawing techniques, and that leftover food is stored, re-used, or discarded properly.
- Inspect all food before preparation and serving. Ensure that all subsistence items, supplies, and equipment in the galley are maintained in a neat and orderly manner.
- Train and supervise personnel assisting with food preparation and meal service.
- Ensure garbage and trash are disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations, and that garbage cans are sanitized, lined with plastic bags, and covered when not in use.
- Become familiar with the location and proper use of firefighting, emergency, and damage control equipment within the galley.
- Have complete knowledge of the responsibilities and duties of all drills held aboard ship and carry out environmental protection and pollution regulations.
- Comply with all company policies, safety standards, and operational procedures.
- Assist with vessel arrivals and departures, including the handling and storing of all dock lines, shore power cords, water hoses, cables, safety lines, fenders, and other equipment as needed.
- Assist with passenger embarkation and disembarkation when required.
- Stand lookout watches while underway, as assigned.
- Support general vessel operations and perform additional duties as needed to contribute to the safe and successful completion of each project.

Qualifications
- Previous experience cooking for crews, lodges, camps, vessels, or commercial kitchens preferred
- Ability to prepare quality meals for multiple people in a remote environment
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Positive attitude and willingness to be part of a small team
- Comfortable living and working aboard a vessel for extended project durations
- Maritime experience is preferred but not required
