Description of Position:
A medical custodian, or hospital custodian/janitor, maintains a clean, safe, and sanitary environment in healthcare facilities by performing routine and heavy-duty cleaning, disinfecting, waste removal, and minor maintenance tasks. Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, dusting, and waxing floors; sanitizing restrooms, patient rooms, and common areas; emptying trash; cleaning windows; and responding to bloodborne pathogen and chemical spills. This role is crucial for infection control, patient comfort, and overall facility safety and compliance with healthcare standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Cleaning and Disinfecting:
· Performing daily cleaning of all assigned areas, including patient rooms, lobbies, hallways, offices, and restrooms.
Floor Care:
· Sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing, and buffing floors to ensure a clean and safe surface.
Waste Management:
· Emptying trash and linen receptacles and properly disposing of waste and soiled linen.
Restroom Maintenance:
· Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, as well as replenishing supplies like soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
Environmental Surface Cleaning:
· Dusting and disinfecting furniture, equipment, walls, and other surfaces.
Specialized Cleaning:
· Performing terminal and in-between case cleaning in surgical and procedure rooms, following specific protocols.
Spill Response:
· Safely containing and cleaning up bloodborne pathogens and chemical spills according to established procedures.
Minor Maintenance:
· Addressing minor issues such as replacing light bulbs, unclogging sinks, or performing minor painting touches.
Window Cleaning:
· Washing interior and accessible exterior windows.
Equipment Operation:
· Safely operating and maintaining cleaning equipment like floor buffers, extractors, and carpet shampooers.

· Detail-Oriented: Focus on thoroughness to ensure a truly clean and safe environment.
· Reliability: Dependable and punctual in performing duties and adhering to schedules.
· Knowledge of Cleaning Protocols: Understanding and following procedures for cleaning, disinfection, and spill containment.
· Physical Stamina: The ability to lift heavy objects, work at heights (e.g., cleaning windows), and perform physically demanding tasks.
· Communication Skills: Effectively reporting maintenance issues or needs to supervisors.
· Safety Awareness: Adherence to safety policies and procedures, including the proper use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
Inventory Management:
Maintain an adequate supply of cleaning products, equipment, and materials.
· Order supplies as needed and manage inventory to prevent shortages.
· Coordination and Communication:
· Communicate with other departments and building management to address cleaning needs and resolve any issues.
· Collaborate with facility management on maintenance and repair needs.
· Respond to requests for custodial services and ensure timely and efficient delivery service.
· Safety and Compliance:
· Ensure adherence to safety regulations, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
· Implement and monitor cleaning protocols and procedures to prevent the spread of infection.
· Maintain accurate records of work completed, staff attendance, and supply usage.
· Other Duties:
· May be required to perform custodial tasks as needed, especially during staff shortages or emergencies.
· Participate in the interview and selection process for new custodial staff.
· Assist with the development and implementation of training programs for custodial staff.
Qualifications:
· High school diploma or equivalent required.
· Previous experience in custodial services preferred.
· Strong knowledge of cleaning techniques, chemicals, and equipment.
· Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills.
· Experience in a medical facility or a related field is a plus.
· Proficiency in inventory management software is also beneficial.
