Position Summary
The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining the financial records of the home health agency and ensuring accurate accounting practices in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Medicare/Medicaid regulations, and applicable federal and state laws. This position supports daily accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, payroll reconciliation, accounts payable/receivable, and audit preparation while maintaining strict confidentiality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
General Accounting
- Prepare and maintain accurate journal entries and general ledger accounts.
- Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and organizational accounting policies.
Accounts Payable
- Review vendor invoices for accuracy and approval.
- Process payments to vendors and maintain payment records.
- Reconcile vendor statements.
- Resolve invoice discrepancies promptly.
Accounts Receivable
- Monitor accounts receivable balances.
- Reconcile Medicare, Medicaid, Medicaid Managed Care, VA, private insurance, and private-pay receivables.
- Assist with collections and payment follow-up.
- Work closely with the billing department regarding payment issues.
Payroll Support
- Assist with payroll processing and payroll tax reconciliation.
- Reconcile payroll reports to the general ledger.
- Monitor employee expense reimbursements.
Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Assist in preparing budgets and financial forecasts.
- Analyze financial data and identify trends or variances.
- Prepare reports for leadership and external agencies.
Compliance and Audits
- Assist with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer audits.
- Maintain documentation for financial compliance.
- Support annual independent financial audits.
- Ensure adherence to internal controls and regulatory requirements.
Banking and Cash Management
- Reconcile bank accounts.
- Monitor cash flow.
- Prepare bank deposits and electronic fund transfers.
- Assist in maintaining cash management reports.
Other Duties
- Maintain confidentiality of financial and employee information.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives.
- Perform additional accounting duties assigned by management.
Required QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
Experience
- Minimum of 2–3 years of accounting experience.
- Experience in healthcare, home health, hospice, or medical billing preferred.
- Experience with Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement is highly desirable.
Knowledge

- Knowledge of Illinois healthcare reimbursement regulations (if applicable).
