Job Overview
The Maintenance Engineer I is an entry-level member of the Engineering team responsible for basic repairs, upkeep, and routine preventive maintenance of hotel facilities, guest rooms, and building systems. Working under close supervision, the Maintenance Engineer I performs basic maintenance and repair tasks across multiple trades, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC/refrigeration, and life-safety ensuring all systems operate safely and in compliance with applicable state and local codes, and assists senior engineers with repairs while developing hands-on technical skills.
The role involves active, physical work throughout the property and requires flexibility to work varied schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call emergency availability.
Job Responsibilities
Maintenance Operations

Perform basic maintenance and minor repairs in guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house spaces.

Assist with repairs involving plumbing, electrical, HVAC, appliances, and carpentry under the direction of senior staff.

Replace or repair basic fixtures, fittings, and equipment as directed.

Help ensure building systems operate safely and in compliance with applicable codes.
Preventive Maintenance

Complete assigned preventive maintenance tasks on schedule.

Inspect guest rooms and facilities to identify maintenance issues early.

Report maintenance issues or system failures to supervisors promptly.

Support upkeep of accurate maintenance records as required.
Guest Experience

Respond promptly and professionally to guest maintenance requests, resolving issues on the first visit whenever possible.

Complete repairs efficiently and discreetly while minimizing guest disruption.

Maintain a courteous and service-oriented approach in all guest interactions.

Uphold a consistently high standard of room and facility readiness and quality.
Building Systems & Equipment

Assist in maintaining HVAC, lighting, plumbing, and mechanical systems.

Perform minor installations, adjustments, and repairs of hotel equipment.

Ensure equipment is functioning safely and report any problems.

Support senior engineers with repairs and other tasks as needed.
Safety & Compliance

Follow all hotel safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Identify, correct, and report unsafe conditions or hazards immediately.

Use tools and equipment safely and maintain a clean, organized work environment.

Ensure compliance with building, fire and life-safety, state/OSHA, and operational safety standards.
Tools & Inventory

Properly use, maintain, and store tools and equipment.

Assist in tracking maintenance supplies and reporting shortages.

Maintain organization and cleanliness of maintenance shops and storage areas.

Ensure responsible, cost-effective use of materials and resources.
Collaboration & Communication

Work with engineering leadership and team members to complete assigned projects.

Coordinate with housekeeping, front office, and outside contractors to support guest and operational needs.

Communicate technical issues clearly and escalate concerns appropriately.
Support team members and share knowledge as needed.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; basic technical or trade exposure a plus.
Experience: 0–1 year of maintenance, repair, or general handyman experience preferred; no prior experience required for candidates who are eager to learn. Basic familiarity with hand tools and common building systems is helpful.
Travel required: No travel required; position is property-based.
Physical requirements:

Frequent walking throughout all hotel areas, including guest rooms and service areas.

Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, and climbing ladders.

Regular lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 lbs.

Use of hand tools and equipment, requiring fine motor skills.

Skills and Abilities:

Certifications: No certifications required; EPA Section 608 or other trade certifications (electrical, HVAC, or plumbing) are a plus, and a willingness to pursue certification is encouraged.
