Position Type: Part-Time (Tuesday through Saturday)
Compensation: $20–$25 per hour, based on experience

Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity is seeking a skilled and mission-driven Construction Assistant to support our construction program by helping build safe, affordable housing for local families. This position combines hands-on construction work, volunteer leadership, homeowner engagement, and project coordination.
The ideal candidate is an experienced construction professional who enjoys teaching others, working with volunteers, and making a meaningful impact in the community through affordable housing.
Position Summary
The Construction Assistant works closely with the Construction Manager to oversee home construction projects, coordinate volunteers on build sites, complete homeowner warranty repairs, and ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to Habitat standards.
Essential ResponsibilitiesHome Construction
- Lead and supervise volunteers during home construction projects.
- Participate in all phases of residential construction and complete construction tasks as needed.
- Coordinate volunteer activities with the Volunteer Manager.
- Teach volunteers proper construction techniques and site safety practices.
- Engage partner families (homebuyers) in the construction process.
- Ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and with high-quality craftsmanship.
- Monitor job site safety and enforce all safety procedures and standards.
- Maintain tools and equipment to ensure they are safe and in good working order.
- Provide regular project updates to the Construction Manager.
- Attend construction, safety, and cost-reduction meetings.
- Assist the Construction Manager with new home builds and special projects as needed.
Homeowner Warranty & Repair Services
- Complete warranty work for newly constructed Habitat homes.
- Respond to and assist homeowners with repair needs and maintenance concerns.
- Build positive relationships with homeowners while providing quality service.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Ensure materials, supplies, and tools are available and organized for daily construction activities.
- Complete required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Assist with and lead supplemental programs, including energy-efficiency initiatives and community partnership projects.
QualificationsRequired Experience & Skills
- Minimum of three (3) years of residential construction experience.
- Ability to teach, mentor, and guide volunteers with varying skill levels.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
- Commitment to teamwork, customer service, and community engagement.
- Professional demeanor and ability to represent Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity positively.
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Personal vehicle with current insurance coverage.
- Ability to perform physical construction work, including lifting, climbing, standing, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
