Job Title: Shop Mechanic

Responsible to: Streets Superintendent
Primary Objective to the Position:
The primary responsibility of this position is to maintain and repair city vehicles from all departments and provide assistance to the Street Department when priorities mandate doing so.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
Performs a variety of engine diagnostic and troubleshooting procedures.
Performs engine, exhaust, electrical, transmission, and brake repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment keeping records of such repairs.
Conducts scheduled preventive maintenance functions, including checking the condition and operation of batteries, tires, lights, transmissions, exhaust systems, and brakes.
Performs preventive maintenance by checking antifreeze, belts, batteries, brakes, lights, hydraulic systems, tires and safety equipment on a variety of gasoline- and diesel-powered equipment, including bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes, tractors, dump trucks, and mowing tractors.
Performs corrective maintenance procedures on heavy equipment, including hydraulic, electrical, and various degrees of engine repair.
Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance procedures such as tune-ups, oil and filter changes, and heating and air conditioning repair.
Performs emergency repairs on vehicles as necessary; may troubleshoot equipment failures at job sites. May be required to order and pick up parts.
Performs small engine repairs; fabricates and welds parts as skills allow.
Keeps records of all equipment maintenance and keeps record with provided programs.
Maintains the shop and assigned tools; performs housekeeping duties.
Responsible for inventory in the maintenance shop/Street Department as needed.
Performs other related duties in the Street Department as assigned. These duties may include but are not limited to operating a sander truck, snowplow truck, forklift, other equipment and duties as skills permit.
Guidelines include state and federal safety rules and environmental regulations, preventive maintenance worksheets, and operating, maintenance, and parts manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
The work consists of related duties in automotive and equipment maintenance and repair and operating/driving Street Department equipment.
Other duties as assigned.
Inclement Weather:
When Inclement weather is predicted it will be the responsibility of the employee scheduled for work to make arrangements to be inside city limits.
The Public Works Department or Police Department may be able to pick up employees for work within the city limits based on need.
It is expected that the employee notifies their supervisor of any changes as soon as possible.
Knowledge/Qualifications Required
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair of vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of trouble shooting procedures.
Knowledge of skills needed to operate plow trucks and dump trucks.
Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
Knowledge of the operating principles and mechanical repair of gasoline and diesel engines.
Skill in diagnosing defects in automotive, diesel, and heavy equipment.
Skill in repairing vehicles and equipment.
Skill in the use of various hand and power tools.
Skill in oral and written communication with basic computer knowledge.
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of
specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated
with a high school education.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
Possession of a valid driver’s license and have or be able to obtain within 1 year of hire a (CDL) issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color. The employee will be asked to drive Street Department equipment. Examples are but not limited to dump trucks, snowplows and sander trucks.
The work is typically performed in a shop and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves
Type of Supervision/Evaluation Received:
The position is subject to a 6 month probationary period, this position is subject to yearly reviews that will be conducted by the streets supervisor.
Salary & Benefits:
This is an hourly position, hourly wages based on experience. Benefits as defined in the employee manual.
