The Direct Care Staff position works under the direct supervision of the Administrator and, when the Administrator is off-site, the House Supervisor. This role involves providing residential treatment and supporting socialization, educational, and recreational activities for developmentally disabled consumers with a range of emotional and behavioral needs.
Direct Care Staff collaborate with other residential employees and outside agencies involved in each client’s Individual Service Plan (ISP). Services are delivered in alignment with the client’s treatment goals and within a supportive residential environment.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Support to Consumers
- Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).
- Provide health care monitoring and management as directed by RN, LVN, or Primary Care Provider.
- Facilitate socialization, community integration, and learning activities.
- Teach and support the development of essential independent living skills.
- Assist consumers in managing emotional and interpersonal challenges.
- Promote development of appropriate interpersonal and social skills.
Program & Clinical Duties
- Build positive, supportive relationships with consumers and interdisciplinary staff.
- Observe, record, and evaluate consumer behavior.
- Provide training in skills such as cooking, hygiene, budgeting, communication, functional living skills, social skills, self-help, and recreational/leisure activities.
- Offer socialization, educational, and recreational activities aligned with treatment goals.
- Evaluate emergencies and take appropriate actions to ensure safety.
- Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs).
- Prepare initial 30-Day Behavior Assessments and Intervention Plans.
- Prepare quarterly progress reports.
- Develop and maintain data collection systems to track consumer progress.
- Participate in and conduct clinical meetings regarding consumer progress.
- Review Treatment Integrity data and monthly behavioral trends.
- Oversee members of the clinical team.
- Collaborate with outside personnel (e.g., Case Managers) as needed to support client and program success.
- Participate in ongoing training, in-service sessions, and staff meetings.
- Plan activities in coordination with the Administrator and residential staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Minimum six months of experience providing direct supervision and special services; or
- Completion of 12 additional hours of related continuing education within six months of hire.
- DSP 1 and DSP 2 completed or currently enrolled (must pass competency tests).
- Completion of at least 12 hours of continuing education meeting Title 17 requirements.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English (verbal and written).
- Successful completion of competency-based Direct Support Professional training.
- Criminal Record Statement, fingerprint clearance, and clean DOJ/FBI background checks.
- Health screening and physical capability to perform assigned duties.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Good standing California driving record.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training.
