This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to develop your skills across diverse medical specialties including dermatology, internal medicine, urgent care, and hospital medicine.(MA) functions as a member of the clinic’s patient care team that includes registered nurses (RN), licensed practice nurses (LPN), clinic assistants, technicians, clerical staff, physician assistants (PA), nurse practitioners (NP), and physicians. The MA performs technical, patient related functions and clerical functions in the ambulatory setting. The MA is also aware of psychosocial needs of patients and families. The MA will support clinic operations and deliver patient care focusing on safe, quality care to ensure that Meriter’s values are met.
Duties
- Assist healthcare providers with patient intake, including collecting medical histories and vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration.
- Prepare examination rooms and ensure all necessary supplies and equipment are ready for patient appointments.
- Perform clinical procedures such as phlebotomy (blood draws), medication administration, and basic life support (BLS) when needed.
- Manage electronic health records (EHR/EHR systems), ensuring accurate documentation of patient encounters, medical histories, medication lists, and ICD coding for diagnoses.
- Support medical office operations by scheduling appointments, managing patient records, verifying insurance information, and handling medical documentation with precision.
- Assist with laboratory tasks including specimen collection and processing in compliance with safety standards.
- Provide excellent patient service by answering questions, explaining procedures, and ensuring a welcoming environment for diverse populations including geriatrics and inpatient settings.
- Collaborate with team members to maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations and uphold the highest standards of medical records management.
- Support hospital medicine or trauma center teams with inpatient care duties as required, including vital signs monitoring and assisting during procedures in OR or emergency settings.
Experience
- Prior experience working in a medical office environment is essential; familiarity with electronic health records (EHR/EMR) systems is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, ICD coding, and basic pharmacology principles.
- Experience supporting dermatology clinics or internal medicine practices is advantageous; hospital or Level I Trauma Center experience is a plus.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required; additional certifications such as phlebotomy or medication administration are desirable.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently within fast-paced environments such as urgent care or hospital settings.
- Strong understanding of medical assisting techniques including intake procedures, vital signs collection, specimen handling, and documentation accuracy.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program (One year program at Vocational School) -or- Completion of an accredited LPN Program -or- Completion of an accredited EMT Program – or – a current CMA, CCMA, or RMA certification.
