Handyman Technician (HMT)
Job Type: Part-Time (W-2)
Primary Service Area: Suburban Chicago market, excluding Chicago
Client type: Residential homeowners with occasional light commercial or landlords
Compensation: Competitive compensation up to $40/hr depending on skills and performance
Typical Schedule: 2-3 days per week during regular business hours (M-F 9a-5p)

Position summary
The Handyman Technician (HMT) performs a broad range of repair and maintenance work while delivering a high-quality customer experience. This role is for a technician who can handle a wide range of common repairs, communicate professionally, and deliver an experience that earns repeat customers and 5-star reviews. You’ll have the ability to work independently in customer homes while following company standards for safety, documentation, and quality.
Essential duties and responsibilities
Repair and maintenance work
- Perform a wide variety of residential repair and maintenance tasks with high-quality workmanship, typically independently but occasionally with teamwork.
- Diagnose issues, propose solutions, and execute repairs efficiently.
- Determine materials needed and obtain materials through approved purchasing procedures when required.
- Use proper protection methods (drop cloths, floor protection, etc.) and leave work areas clean.
Customer communication and service
- Communicate professionally with customers regarding scope, options, and expectations.
- Prepare and present repair recommendations and pricing using company tools/software.
- Represent the company professionally in appearance, communication, and conduct.
- Coordinate with the office team regarding scheduling, job updates, and follow-ups.
Systems, documentation, and operational standards
- Follow company standards, policies, and safety practices consistently.
- Document work thoroughly using photos and job notes (before/after as applicable).
- Complete required job checklists, collect payments, and close out jobs properly.
- Protect confidential business information, internal tools, and company procedures.
- Support team development by sharing knowledge, best practices, and technical guidance with other technicians; participate in ride-alongs, training and coaching as needed.
Vehicle, tools, and job readiness
- Drive safely between job sites and suppliers as needed.
- Keep work vehicles clean, organized, and properly stocked.
- Maintain and care for company tools and equipment; report damaged or missing items promptly.
- Attend training and safety sessions as scheduled.
Required qualifications
- Proven handyman / residential repair experience with a broad skill base (see below)
- Strong communication skills in English (you’ll be customer-facing every day).
- Able to work independently while following defined systems and standards.
- Professional appearance and demeanor; able to represent the company in customer homes.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Comfortable using an Android tablet for job management and documentation.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet insurability requirements.
- Ability to pass applicable post-offer background check, drug screening (including cannabis/THC), and motor vehicle records checks consistent with applicable law and company policy.
Minimum Required Skills:
Technicians should have full competency and good speed in the following areas at minimum:
- Drywall patching/repair
- Painting of drywall, doors and trim by brush and roller
- Wall and floor tile installation, LVP and laminate flooring installation
- Installation of pre-hung doors (interior/exterior)
Additional Beneficial Skills (you don’t have to be “the best” at everything—just solid and teachable)
Technicians should have competency in common household repair and maintenance tasks such as:
- Basic door/cabinet repairs and hardware adjustments
- Basic plumbing fixture replacements (p-traps, faucets, shower heads) and toilet repairs and adjustments
- Basic electrical replacements (switches, outlets, light fixtures)
- Caulking/sealing and general home maintenance items
- Assembly and installation work (furniture, fixtures, shelving, etc.)
- Mounting/anchoring of common household items (TVs, shelving, curtains/blinds, artwork, etc.)
- Basic carpentry and trim installation (baseboards, casing, crown, base shoe)
- General troubleshooting and practical problem-solving
- Smart home installation (doorbells, cameras, thermostats)
- Garbage disposal replacement
- Sump pump replacement
Physical requirements and working conditions
- Regularly lift/carry up to 60 lbs; occasionally up to 100 lbs with assistance or proper equipment.
- Frequent driving, standing, kneeling, bending, reaching, and working overhead.
- Ability to safely ascend/descend ladders and work at heights safely (up to 15 feet).
- Ability to work in limited-access areas (e.g. attics, crawlspaces) when required.
- Work in varying indoor/outdoor conditions, including seasonal weather exposure.
