Introducing Ride Smart Ohio, a student-focused transportation solution for Ohio school districts. Ride Smart Ohio helps address the driver shortage in Ohio by providing safe, reliable transportation for students who are not served by regular bus routes or who have unique or special transportation needs.
Students need caring, compassionate drivers to help them access their educational opportunities. As a Ride Smart Ohio driver, you can provide safe transportation for students while traveling along your usual route to work, school, or other destinations. You may be the one person today who makes a meaningful difference for a child!
What You'll Do:

Safely transport students to and from school, programs, and other authorized destinations.

Provide a safe, reliable, and welcoming transportation experience for students.

Follow all applicable Ohio laws, regulations, Ride Smart Ohio procedures, and safety requirements.

Complete a daily pre-trip inspection of the vehicle before each drive.

Maintain appropriate student supervision and behavior expectations while students are in the vehicle.

Report accidents, incidents, vehicle damage, safety concerns, or other issues promptly.

Maintain required vehicle cleanliness and report maintenance concerns as needed.

Complete all required transportation documentation and records accurately and on time.

Complete required driver training and annual in-service training.
-
Maintain current licensing, medical, background check, and other required qualifications.

Communicate professionally with students, families, school staff, and Ride Smart Ohio personnel.

Follow all Ride Smart Ohio policies and procedures related to student transportation and confidentiality.

Provide dependable transportation services while demonstrating patience, compassion, and professionalism.
What You'll Bring:
-
Must be at least 21 years of age.
-
At least four (4) years of driving experience.
-
A valid driver's license.
-
Ability to successfully pass an annual physical examination.
-
Satisfactory criminal background report.
-
Proof of current vehicle insurance.
-
Acceptable driving record and successful completion of Ride Smart Ohio's required driver record checks.

Ability to successfully complete the required 4-hour van driver training in accordance with Ohio Department of Education and Workforce requirements.

Ability to complete 2 hours of annual in-service training.
-
Strong commitment to safe and defensive driving practices.
-
Dependability, patience, and a genuine interest in supporting students.
-
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
-
Ability to comply with all Ride Smart Ohio vehicle and safety requirements.
Driver Record Requirements:
Ride Smart Ohio will conduct semi-annual driver record checks. Drivers may be disqualified from driving for Ride Smart Ohio if their record includes:

More than six (6) points during the past two (2) years.
-
A conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or a controlled substance during the past ten (10) years.
-
Two (2) or more serious traffic violations as defined by the Ohio Revised Code.
-
Any railroad crossing violation during the past year, whether by conviction, video, or report from a railroad official.
Vehicle Requirements:
-
Drivers may use their own personal vehicle, subject to Ride Smart Ohio approval and inspection requirements.

Vehicle must be constructed by the manufacturer to carry nine (9) or fewer passengers.

Students may not ride in the front seat.
-
Vehicle must be inspected by a qualified mechanic at least twice per year.
-
Driver must complete a daily pre-trip inspection before each drive.
-
Vehicles less than 10 years old are preferred.
-
Vehicle must meet all Ride Smart Ohio safety and equipment requirements.
Ride Smart Ohio Will Provide:

Safety equipment, including:
-
Fire extinguisher
-
First-aid kit
-
Body fluid cleanup kit
-
Fuses and spare fuses, if applicable
-
Emergency reflectors
-
A rooftop sign marked "School Transportation."

A Ride Smart Ohio magnet for the side of the vehicle.
-
Insurance coverage for the entirety of the trip while the student is in the vehicle.
-
Two-way cameras that record both the front-facing view and the interior of the vehicle.
