The Fire Battalion Chief is responsible for planning, supervising, directing and coordinating the work of employees on an assigned shift; preparing and maintaining records and files; and preparing reports. Primary duties include:

Plans, coordinates, and directs fire suppression, rescue and extrication activities on an assigned shift.

Supervises personnel through subordinate supervisors; assigns tasks; conducts annual performance appraisals and maintains appropriate documentation on direct reports.

Prepares reports and maintains records; reviews activity logs; reviews and approves/denies leave requests.

Responds to calls for service,

Inspects personal equipment and apparatus for readiness.

Reviews, develops, recommends and implements policies and procedures; ensures dissemination to department personnel.

Assists with the development of the department operating and capital improvement budgets.

Coordinates and directs required training, rotation and work assignments on shift; ensures adequate staffing of engine companies and stations.

Inspects station and grounds; assigns additional routine maintenance tasks as needed.

Receives, processes and resolves personnel issues and concerns, and matters relating to discipline.

Develops and oversees the hiring process; develops and administers tests as needed.

Oversees promotional process, including testing, oral boards and practicals.

Performs related tasks as required.

The ideal candidate has strong expertise in fire suppression tactics, emergency operations, and firefighting hydraulics, along with a solid understanding of departmental policies, city ordinances, and the city’s geographic layout. They can interpret diagrams, pre-incident plans, and GIS mapping tools, and are proficient in operating and maintaining fire apparatus, equipment, and fire service technology such as MCT, Interactive Mapping, and Wiser. The role requires the ability to prepare detailed reports, maintain accurate records, use standard office software, perform arithmetic calculations, and apply basic governmental accounting practices. Candidates must demonstrate sound decision-making under pressure, effective supervision during emergency incidents, and the ability to build strong working relationships with staff, partner agencies, and the public. An associate's degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, or another job-related field, along with at least twelve years of progressive fire service experience, including four years of supervisory experience at the rank of Captain or higher, is required.
Possession of a valid North Carolina Class “B” driver’s license upon hire. Possession of EMR / EMT-B, Fire Officer II, Fire Instructor I, NC FF 2 (or obtainment through reciprocity), and NIMS ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800 certifications upon hire.
