Position Overview
Progspectra is partnering with an elite California-based healthcare facility to recruit a highly sophisticated, clinically adept, and compliance-driven Director of Pharmacy. The chosen individual will assume full administrative, financial, operational, and clinical accountability for our client hospital's pharmacy department.
This is an executive leadership role positioned within an institutional hospital environment. Because of the vast complexities regarding clinical workflows and California's rigorous regulatory structure, retail or community pharmacy experience alone is completely insufficient for this role. Candidates must possess a verifiable track record of navigating multi-faceted inpatient departments, complex sterile compounding setups, and intensive inter-departmental hospital dynamics.
Key Responsibilities
1. Hospital Operations & Clinical Governance
· Total Department Accountability: Oversee the safe, legal, and efficient procurement, storage, compounding, distribution, and clinical tracking of all pharmaceuticals throughout the hospital ecosystem.
· P&T Committee Leadership: Actively serve as a leader on the hospital’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee. Review, maintain, and optimize the inpatient drug formulary to maximize clinical efficacy and implement strict cost controls.
· Interdepartmental Collaboration: Liaise continuously with Chief Medical Officers, Chiefs of Nursing, Quality Assurance, and hospital financial executives to align pharmacy outcomes with hospital clinical metrics and patient safety standards.
· 24/7 Service Guardrails: Maintain the continuous structural availability of safe medication administration, emergency drug supplies, and decentralized clinical coverage across all floors and critical care units 24/7.
2. State & Federal Compliance Leadership (California Nuance)
· Title 22 Mastery: Ensure the hospital pharmacy remains in an absolute state of continuous audit-readiness under California Code of Regulations (CCR) Title 22 healthcare facility standards.
· California Board of Pharmacy Compliance: Enforce flawless adherence to all California State Board of Pharmacy mandates, including compounding regulations (sterile USP <797> and hazardous USP <800> environments), automated dispensing cabinet protocols (Pyxis/Omnicell), and drug pedigree tracking.
· Controlled Substance Security: Maintain total oversight of controlled substance reconciliation and logging processes, implementing strict diversion prevention protocols across the entire facility.
3. Financial & Budgetary Control
· Inpatient Revenue Optimization: Manage a multi-million dollar pharmaceutical spend, balancing drug purchase costs, group purchasing organization (GPO) contracts, and 340B drug pricing program integrity.
· Labor & Workforce Strategy: Strategically manage scheduling and performance metrics for clinical pharmacists, technicians, and specialized pharmacy leads to ensure high clinical output and compliant staffing ratios.
Job Requirements & Qualifications
· California Licensure: Active, unrestricted license as a Registered Pharmacist (RPh) issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy.
· Hospital Experience Rule (Mandatory Hard Filter): Minimum of 5–7+ years of progressive pharmacy management experience, with at least 3+ years in an hospital pharmacy leadership role (Director, Assistant Director, or Inpatient Pharmacy Manager).
· The 'No-Retail' Guardrail: Candidates whose background is exclusively within retail, community, or independent compounding sectors are strictly unqualified for this position. This role requires native familiarity with inpatient unit-dose distribution, clinical code blue responses, complex hospital billing structures, and Joint Commission standards.
What We Offer
· Highly competitive executive compensation package tied to California acute-care benchmarks.
· Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance packages with heavy employer sponsorship.
· Generous retirement contributions, executive bonus structures, and allowances for continuing California board compliance.
