About EOA
EOA is a small multi-disciplinary environmental consulting firm that specializes in water quality stewardship. We combine sound science and engineering with regulatory expertise, collaborative problem-solving skills and public policy savvy to deliver cost-effective, innovative and practical solutions to today’s water quality challenges. For 40 years we have helped a wide range of public agencies, private businesses, and other organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout California to protect, restore and enhance the water environment, while complying with State and Federal environmental regulations.
We have an exceptional technical staff of roughly 30 engineers, scientists, and planners, most with advanced technical degrees and over 10 years of consulting experience that have led the development and implementation of award-winning water quality control and monitoring and assessment programs, and successfully conducted studies and policy-initiatives designed to protect and restore water quality and fish and wildlife populations in California. With a focus on public agency assistance, we’ve created and assisted cities and counties in managing the impacts of stormwater and wastewater on local creeks, rivers, estuaries and the Pacific Ocean. We’ve also provided invaluable services to resource managers by conducting risk assessments and identifying pollutant control programs and watershed management actions needed to evaluate practical solutions to challenging water quality problems.
Position Summary
EOA is seeking an Environmental Outreach and Fieldwork Assistant who will work out of our Sunnyvale (CA) office (or hybrid remote and office). This position is ideal for an individual that has experience and is interested in supporting environmental outreach and education projects designed to increase public awareness of water quality issues and promote behaviors that protect local waterways. The successful candidate will assist with the implementation of established, award-winning environmental outreach campaigns and programs, working under the direction of industry-leading scientists, engineers, and outreach specialists, most with advanced degrees and over 20 years of experience. Additionally, the right candidate will enjoy hands-on project work that focuses on water quality monitoring/assessment, pollutant source identification and control, and data management and analysis.
Responsibilities
This position includes conducting tasks and projects in the field and in the office. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist with the design and implementation of education and outreach techniques and programs.
- Organize and staff public education and outreach events to promote stormwater pollution prevention (some events require working on weekends).
- Assist with the development and reprints of public education materials on stormwater pollution prevention and Best Management Practices (BMPs).
- Maintain public education point-of-purchase materials and educate consumers on stormwater pollution prevention and BMPs.
- Support the planning, preparation, and facilitation of training workshops on various pollution prevention issues for agency staff and the public.
- Utilize knowledge and understanding of social marketing tools and strategies to disseminate public education and outreach messaging in a professional, creative, visually pleasing, and informative manner.
- Work with and coordinate municipal committees on special projects and researching stormwater pollution issues.
- Manage an extensive inventory of public education and outreach materials (electronic and physical copies).
- Respond to inquiries, questions and concerns from local agencies, organizations, and the public.
- Complete administrative tasks like scheduling meetings, distributing meeting agendas and meeting summaries, and sending professional emails as they relate to outreach efforts or other projects, as assigned.
- Conduct field inspections of commercial and industrial facilities to ensure proper stormwater management controls.
- Conduct water quality monitoring and on-land visual assessments to evaluate the level of pollutants in watersheds, stormwater discharges, and creeks.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum qualifications for this position include:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies/Science or related field of study OR at least four years of relevant work experience.
- Excellent communication and organization skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including effective use of Microsoft software packages (e.g., Word and Excel).
- Experience with and aptitude for effectively communicating with the public.
- Ability to lift boxes of materials/supplies up to 25 lbs. in weight.
- Experience in using Microsoft Office applications, especially Word, Power Point, and Excel.
- A valid California driver’s license and the willingness and ability to conduct field inspections.
Desired Qualifications
- Additional qualifications for this position that are not required, but would be helpful include:
- Relevant or similar work experience in addition to a bachelor’s degree.
- Skills in graphic design and experience with document layout software (e.g., Canva or Adobe InDesign).
- Experience with website design and maintenance using website software (e.g., Word Press).
- Experience with using social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.)
What Success Looks Like
- Within the first month, you will begin learning EOA’s systems, project types, internal platforms, and approaches. You will start assisting with outreach meetings, events, and stormwater fieldwork.
- Within the first three months, you will be contributing to multiple field-based stormwater projects, understanding our project partners and clients, providing guidance on media outreach, using design tools (e.g., Canva) to develop flyers or social media posts, updating websites, and staffing outreach events. You will develop and hone professional writing internally and externally, including emails, reports, meetings summaries, etc.
- Within six months, you will be able to collaborate on all outreach events, media, and partner communication, staff all outreach events and execute outreach efforts, review and provide feedback on consultant deliverables, complete administrative tasks with minimal oversight, conduct inspections and fieldwork as assigned, contribute to other projects, and help strengthen EOA’s stormwater project capacity.
Authorization to Work
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. EOA is not currently able to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Classifications & Base Salary/Compensation
- Applicable Classifications – Assistant Scientist I or Associate Scientist I, II, III
- Base Salary Range - $60,000 to $90,000 per year
