The Kentucky Department of Education is a service agency of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and part of the Education and Labor Cabinet. The department provides resources and guidance to Kentucky’s public schools and districts as they implement the state’s P-12 education requirements. The department also serves as the state liaison for federal education requirements and funding opportunities.
The department is led by an appointed commissioner of education, who is hired by and answers to the 11-member Kentucky Board of Education. Offices are administered by associate commissioners, and divisions within those offices are administered by division directors.
The department employs approximately 425 Frankfort-based workers; 175 employees in support of the Kentucky School for the Blind (Jefferson County) and Kentucky School for the Deaf (Boyle County); and about 518 employees at the 50 Area Technology Centers across the state.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Performs data analysis and research. Uses data-oriented programming languages and tools to collect, query, analyze, and report on data. Provides technical assistance to local school district personnel and other state educational agencies in the development, coordination, implementation and monitoring of the District and School Collection Repository (DASCR).
- Analyzes, verifies and reports on student data in assigned school districts using the Kentucky Student Information System. Assists districts with student data tracking processes to improve data quality. Serves as data steward for DASCR, System Admin Schools and Districts and graduation code responsibilities. Makes system updates per Office of Education and Licensure Effectiveness (OELE) for colleges or universities that need to be added for high school and college credit.
- Collects, analyzes, verifies, reviews and processes student, school and district data, including Functional Data Requirements (FRDs) for student attendance data, graduation codes (G Codes) and end-of-year processing. Collaborate with stakeholders to address data-related needs.
- Oversees data request and ad hoc reports to ensure accuracy. Verifies information in the Person Role Manager System to maintain demographic information on administration, student & grade movement within the school system. Completes attendance and financial data program tracking sheets for school districts. Reviews and revises attendance audit reports.
- Provides training and technical assistance to personnel in assigned school districts, including updates on legislative, regulatory and agency policy changes relating to attendance. Attends regional meetings in assigned school districts related to attendance and presents at regional and state meetings.
- Provides training on cross-agency initiatives to include leadership initiatives and collaborative efforts to meet the Commissioner's objectives.
