The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for supporting and continuously improving workplace safety and environmental programs to ensure regulatory compliance and protect employees, contractors, and visitors. This cross functional role will partner closely with production teams, human resources, maintenance and leadership to proactively identify hazards, coordinate safety training, investigate incidents, and promote a respectful, people focused safety culture.
The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist serves as a primary resource for OSHA compliance, chemical safety, waste management, emergency preparedness, and safety performance tracking. Success in this role requires strong follow-through, clear communication, and the ability to address safety issues directly and professionally while treating others with respect and grace.
- Maintain and continuously improve site safety and environmental programs in compliance with OSHA, EPA, NYS DEC, and applicable regulations.
- Coordinating, delivering, and documents required safety training, ensuring employees understand expectations and can perform work safely which may include PPE compliance, ergonomics, hearing conservation, respiratory protection and emergency evacuation processes.
- Proactively identify and mitigate workplace hazards through daily walk-throughs of production areas, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), inspections, and reviews of new equipment, materials, and processes.
- Maintain the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) system and oversee chemical approval, labeling, and safe storage practices.
- Lead accident, incident, and near‑miss investigations using root‑cause analysis, focusing on learning, accountability, and prevention.
- Facilitate the Safety Committee by encouraging open communication, tracking action items, and ensuring timely resolution of safety concerns.
- Manage hazardous and non‑hazardous waste programs, including inspections, documentation, and vendor coordination.
- Maintain the Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan and serve as Chief Warden during drills or emergencies.
- Conduct routine inspections of safety and emergency equipment and ensure deficiencies are corrected.
- Support the Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) program through procedure maintenance, training, and periodic audits.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and external EHS partners and support inspections and audits.
- Track and maintain safety performance metrics including OSHA logs (300, 300A, 301) and required postings to support and promote a positive safety culture aligned with SSP’s CORE Principles.
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field preferred or equivalent experience may be considered, (ie. Construction health and safety technician, or military safety leader).
- 1-3 years of experience supporting safety and/or environmental programs in a manufacturing or regulated environment is a plus.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and standard manufacturing safety programs (HazCom, LOTO, PPE, incident investigation).
- Must be Hazmat Manifest/Transport certified or become certified within 6 months of hire.
- Implement a Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response program
- General understanding of chemical management and environmental compliance requirements.
- Experience coordinating safety training, conducting inspections, JSAs, and incident or near‑miss investigations.
- Strong organizational and follow‑through skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and corrective actions.
- Clear, and respectful communicator able to work effectively with employees and leadership at all levels.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and capable of maintaining accurate electronic records and reports.
- Demonstrates integrity, accountability, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Safety certifications (OSHA 30‑Hour, CHST, ASP, CSP) are a plus.
