JOB
Under general supervision, performs preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on Harris County-owned vehicles and equipment in accordance with County policies, safety standards, and OEM specifications. Ensures fleet assets remain safe, reliable, and available for operational use.
Duties & Responsibilities
Technicians may work on passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks and SUVs, medium-duty trucks, heavy-duty diesel trucks, trailers, construction and public works equipment, agricultural and grounds maintenance equipment, and small engine equipment.
Diagnosing Mechanical Problems: Using diagnostic tools and knowledge of automotive systems to identify issues.
Perform preventive maintenance and inspections.
Diagnose, troubleshoot, and perform high-quality repairs with a "fix it right the first time" approach.
Conduct quality control inspections on vendor repairs.
Prepare estimates and communicate with Service Coordinators and Parts personnel.
Utilize OEM scan tools and fleet software.
Support various shops based on operational needs.
Replacing Parts: Removing and replacing worn or damaged parts, including engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical components.
Road Testing: Conducting road tests to ensure repairs are complete and vehicles are operating safely.
Conducting Inspections: Performing routine inspections of vehicles and equipment to identify potential problems.
Lubricating and Servicing: Lubricating moving parts, changing fluids, and performing other routine maintenance tasks.
Assisting with Roadside Service: Providing assistance to disabled vehicles and equipment.
May Operate a Forklift: Depending on the specific job requirements, a mechanic may be required to operate a forklift.
May Assist with Other Tasks: Depending on the specific job requirements, a mechanic may be required to assist with other tasks, such as cleaning the shop or ordering parts. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
Harris County PCT3 Fleet Services provides specialty tools and diagnostic equipment. Employees are expected to provide a basic set of mechanic hand tools.
May be required to respond during emergencies, disasters, severe weather events, and other operational incidents, including working extended hours, weekends, holidays, and after-hours callouts.

Education:
Experience:
Minimum of one year of dealership, fleet, diesel, or automotive repair experience.
Automotive Technology education may be considered for experience.
Licensure:
Valid Texas Driver's License required.
CDL is not required at the time of hire; however, employees must be able to obtain a CDL through Harris County once employed.

Physical Demands:
Frequently lifts and carries up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, reaching, and working in confined spaces for extended periods. May be required to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a fleet maintenance facility, garage environment, and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Employees may be exposed to heat, cold, humidity, rain, dust, noise, vibration, exhaust fumes, fuels, oils, lubricants, cleaning chemicals, and other materials commonly associated with vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
Duties may require working around moving vehicles, heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and powered tools.
Employees may be required to work in confined spaces, in uneven terrain, and in areas with limited comfort from weather conditions.
This position may require response during emergencies, disasters, severe weather events, and other operational incidents, including extended work hours, weekends, holidays, and after-hours callouts.
Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
