Job Overview
The Maintenance Machinist is responsible for precision fabrication, repair, modification of machine components guarding, guides, fixtures, and occasional production tooling to support safe, reliable plant operations. This role works closely with Production and Engineering to reduce downtime, improve safety, and support continuous improvement-- including assisting with building and modifying machines-- using manual machining, wire EDM, welding, and CAD/CAM.
Responsibilities
- Machine, repair, and modify components using manual mill and manual lathe
- Perform precision finishing work using a surface grinder
- Set up and operate wire EDM equipment to produce or repair precision components
- Weld and fabricate brackets, supports, frames, guards, and repairs (MIG/TIG/Stick as applicable)
- Design, fabricate, and install machine guarding and safety-related components to support safe operation and compliance
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues affecting downtime, safety, scrap, or quality; implement corrective actions
- Assist Maintenance and Engineering with machine builds, upgrades, modifications, and improvement projects
- Produce and maintain accurate parts using prints, sketches, and measurements
- Communicate effectively between departmens regarding priorities, scope, and timelines
- Maintain clean and organized work areas; follow all safety requirements (LOTO, PPE, guarding standards)
- Other duties as assigned by Leadership
Skills
- Strong manual machining skills (mill and lathe) with ability to hold tolerances and produce repeatable results
- Surface grinding experience (setup and precision finishing)
- Wire EDM experience (setup and operation)
- CAD/CAM proficiency required (create/edit part geometry and generate programs/toolpaths as needed)
- Welding/fabrication capability for industrial maintenance work
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings/prints; understanding of tolerances and fits
- Proficient with precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, indicators, gauges, etc.)
- Mechanical troubleshooting skills in a manufacturing/manufacturing maintenance environment
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office) and ability to document work and communicate clearly
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and manage priorities
- Willingness and ability to support other maintenance functions as needed
- 2D and 3D modeling experience
Job Demands
- Ability to stand/walk for 8-12 hours a day
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to bend, kneel, reach, climb, and work in/around machinery as required
- Exposure to uncontrolled temperatures, noise, dust, and industrial environments
- Ability to maintain focus and attention to detail for precision machining and measurement work
- Rotational on-call for nights and weekends as needed for maintenance emgerncy support
- Required PPE: safety glasses, hearing protection and other PPE as required
