Job Summary:
An Elementary School Counselor supports the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development of students in grades Pre-K through 6. The counselor collaborates with teachers, administrators, and families to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that promotes student success and well-being.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and small-group counseling to students experiencing academic, social, emotional, or behavioral challenges.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with district, state, and national standards.
- Deliver classroom guidance lessons on topics such as conflict resolution, emotional regulation, character development, bullying prevention, and career awareness.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and school staff to identify student needs and develop appropriate intervention strategies.
- Conduct risk assessments and provide crisis intervention and support during emergencies.
- Maintain confidential student records and documentation in accordance with federal, state, and district policies.
- Participate in multidisciplinary teams, including Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504, and Response to Intervention (RTI)/Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) meetings.
- Refer students and families to community resources and outside mental health providers when appropriate.
- Analyze student data to identify trends and develop programs that improve attendance, behavior, and academic achievement.
- Promote a positive school climate through prevention programs, family engagement activities, and school-wide initiatives.
- Consult with school leadership regarding student support services and best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Valid state certification or licensure as a School Counselor.
- Knowledge of child development, counseling techniques, and educational best practices.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse student populations, families, and staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an elementary school setting.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed practices, restorative approaches, and positive behavior interventions.
- Experience using student information systems and data analysis tools.
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities are a plus.

Work Environment
Elementary School Counselors interact daily with students, families, teachers, and administrators. The position typically follows the academic calendar and may include occasional evening or after-school events.
