About BGC Metro North’s Music Program:
The Art Program within BGC Metro North focuses on helping youth develop social-emotional and workforce skills through creative exploration, artistic expression, and hands-on, project-based learning. Youth are encouraged to explore a wide range of disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and other traditional and digital art forms.
Within our art spaces, youth have access to a variety of traditional supplies and tools, as well as digital equipment and software to support photography, digital illustration, graphic design, and other contemporary practices. Staff within our art spaces are equipped to facilitate a broad range of artistic interests and skill levels while fostering a positive, inclusive environment where youth can develop their creative voices.
Position Overview:
We are seeking an enthusiastic artist to join our team as Assistant Art Specialist, working out of our Saugus Teen Center. This position is ideal for those passionate about youth development and skilled in visual arts. Staff members play a key role in helping youth from grades 5-12 explore their interests, build technical skills, and express themselves in a supportive, inclusive environment.
The Assistant Art Specialist will be responsible for facilitating programming within our designated art space at the Saugus Teen Center, facilitating regular showcases of youth works, as well as maintaining program equipment and areas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate Art Programming: Design, organize, and implement engaging art programs and activities that encourage creative expression, self-discovery, and youth voice utilizing a wide range of art disciplines and mediums, including drawing, painting, 3D art, digital art, photography, and nontraditional media.
- Support Youth Development: Serve as a positive role model and mentor to club youth, ensuring a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment where teens can explore art as a tool for personal growth and creative expression.
- Maintaining Equipment and Space: Keep the art space clean and tour-ready, and ensure that program supplies are clean, functional, and well stocked.
- Event and Performance Support: Assist with planning and facilitating youth showcases and other events for youth.
- Reporting Program Success: Utilize data tracking tools to provide accurate measures of youth engagement, program success, and long term member retention
- Program Adaptation: Offer feedback on programming and adjust content and approaches based on youth engagement and response.
- Cross-Program Flexibility: Support other program spaces & events as needed, contributing to a strong and consistent presence across all related sites.
- Other tasks & projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Demonstrated experience, knowledge, and interest in the arts.
- Minimum of 2 years experience working with youth
Skills and experience:
- Ability to guide and support youth in both digital and traditional art projects.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and relate to diverse groups of teens.
- Flexibility to support programming across various locations or events as needed.
- IT and computer skills relevant to operating and troubleshooting program materials
- Knowledge of child development and behavior management techniques
- Ability to plan and implement age-appropriate activities
- Ability to maintain a safe and healthy environment for children
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and learning
Organization-wide responsibilities:
Works within legal, regulatory, accreditation and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by the Boys & Girls Club; follows safe practices required for the position; complies with appropriate BGC policies and procedures; fulfills any training required by BGC, as appropriate; brings potential matters of non-compliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate BGC staff.

- Work is performed predominantly inside but also outside at times.
- Hours: 1pm - 6pm Monday - Friday with monthly half days in accordance with the Wakefield and Stoneham Public School schedules.
