PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The primary responsibility of a barback is to provide assistance to bartenders. Barbacks do not take orders or handle payments. Successful Barbacks are energetic and detail-oriented individuals. They can effortlessly switch between working “behind the scenes” and “in the spotlight,” and are just as comfortable speaking with the guests, as they are speaking with coworkers. In addition to these general skills and personality traits, we are seeking Barbacks with the following skills and responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assist bartenders in their tasks

Meets and exceeds all guest’s needs and requests; anticipate guests needs.

Maintain composed, professional and calm attitude at all times.

Help stock and set up Bartender's station prior to opening

Help with any prep that needs to be done either before or during service.

Be able to know what the bar needs without bartenders having to ask.

Ensure that all prepped ingredients, glassware, liquor, and ice wells are stocked.

Be knowledgeable of the drink and dinner menu to be able to describe any drink or dinner menu upon request from the guest.

Bring the Mise en Place setup to guest to replace any missing or dirty silverware and fill waters if necessary.

Definition of “Mise En Place – to replace, put in place or everything in place. Pronounced “Mi Za Plas.”

Keep dining area clean and free of debris.

Remove soiled linen and replace with clean if necessary. For example, napkins.

Occasionally check on the guests to make sure they are enjoying their meals and to handle any needs or impromptu requests or issues.

Inform bartender and management on any guest feedback, good or bad.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Complete all side-work as directed

Assist in an entire team effort.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Position is in busy, two story non-smoking restaurant in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Must be able to frequently stand, sit, bend, stoop, kneel and crouch.

Must be able to work nights, weekends & holidays

As the name would suggest, the main responsibility of a Barback is to back up the bartenders in every way. This may involve lifting trays, plates, glasses up and down the stairs. You will need the ability to be able to lift up to fifty (50) lbs., and to lift overhead and push/pull, move lighter objects.
