Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Housing Specialist to join our organization’s team. The Housing Specialist will play a vital role in connecting individuals and families from underserved communities with stable, affordable housing opportunities. This position involves providing comprehensive case management, navigating housing assistance programs, and supporting high-risk populations, including those with mental health conditions or substance use challenges. Responsible for completing the ongoing, annual and interim re-examinations for HCV Program participants such as notifying participants and owner/landlords of updates, initiate move requests and annual rent adjustments. Additional responsibilities include explaining, interpreting, and applying HUD and Agency policies, procedures, and regulations in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Duties
- Adhere to Discrimination and Fair Housing Policy
- Familiar with applicant and participant eligibility
- Conducts program informational briefings.
- Calculates applicant and participant income, determines rent amounts and executes HAP contracts.
- Conduct interviews for prospective and current participants and assist clients in office.
- Schedule and conduct annual and interim redeterminations of eligibility following established guidelines and procedures. Collect recertification information, including income and any other required documentation for the administration of the HCV program.
- Assist clients in accessing housing assistance programs such as Section 8, and other local initiatives by guiding them through application processes and eligibility requirements.
- Advocate on behalf of clients during negotiations with landlords and property management companies to secure affordable and suitable housing options.
- Maintain accurate case records using property management software such as Yardi or OneSite; track progress and document service delivery.
- Educate clients on landlord-tenant law, Fair Housing regulations, and tenants’ rights to promote informed decision-making.
Requirements
- Knowledge of the Housing Choice Voucher Program requirements, policies and procedures.
- Always demonstrate a high level of professionalism and superior customer service skills.
- Answer phone and emails, speak to prospective owners about the HCV program, answer inquiries from participants, owners, applicants and the general public.
- Proven experience working with individuals from underserved communities or high-risk populations.
- Strong knowledge of landlord-tenant law, Fair Housing regulations, and housing assistance programs including Section 8.
- Proficiency in property management software such as Yardi or OneSite; familiarity with case management tools is preferred.
- Knowledge of community resources related to housing support.
