SUMMARY
This contract Civil Engineer 1 – Structural assignment will provide support to the Structural and Civil Engineering organization within Transmission Engineering and Technical Services division. Structural Design provides analysis and design services to support capital improvements and general maintenance, repairs, and upkeep of all structural aspects of corporate transmission system, including transmission line towers and structures, substation structures including all equipment, bus and overhead cable supports, telecommunication towers and structures, buildings, and other structures on the transmission system
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Substation Structural Design (Footings, Foundations, Structures):
- Provide engineering support and assistance for substation structures including towers, poles, frames, trusses, pedestals, racks, and others. Materials are predominantly steel and concrete, but other materials such as wood and aluminum are occasionally used. All work to be reviewed by BFTE senior engineers or technical team leads. Tasks include:
- Analysis of existing structures for structural adequacy in the case of new/increased loading and/or changed design criteria. Results of analysis will be used by team leads for decisions regarding using existing structures as-is, modifying existing structures, or replacing.
- Produce structural designs for new structures including production of installation drawings, design criteria drawings, minor structural detailing, and others.
- Provide construction support.
Transmission Structural Design (Structures, Footings):
- Provide engineering support and assistance for various structure types as transmission line supports. These structure types include lattice steel (or aluminum) towers, single or multiple steel pole structures, single or multiple wood pole structures, concrete structures, and others. All work to be reviewed by BFTE senior engineers or technical team leads. Tasks include:
- Analysis of existing structures for structural adequacy in the case of new/increased loading and/or changed design criteria. Results of analysis will be used by team leads for decisions regarding using existing structures as-is, modifying existing structures, or replacing.
- Produce structural designs of new structures including production of installation drawings, design criteria drawings, minor structural detailing, and others.
- Conduct design and review of fall protection on new and existing structures.
- Provide construction support.
Telecommunication Structural Design (Structures, Footings, Non-structural Components):
- Provide engineering support and assistance for corporate extensive communication network (predominantly microwave) that is constantly undergoing modifications and enhancements. Structure types include lattice steel towers, monopoles, mounting hardware, waveguide/ice bridges, and others. All work to be reviewed by BFTE senior engineers or technical team leads. Tasks include:
- Analysis of existing structures and non-structural components (waveguide bridge, cable trays, battery racks, etc.) for structural adequacy in the case of new/increased loading and/or changed design criteria. Results of analysis will be used by team leads for decisions regarding using existing structures as-is, modifying existing structures, or replacing.
- Conduct retrofit and modification designs.
- Develop and document structural design criteria used by outside vendors to design new communication structures.
- Conduct design and review of fall protection on new and existing structures.
- Provide construction support.
Building Structural Design/Analysis:
- Provide engineering support and assistance for building analysis and design. Corporate has numerous buildings in their systems that are constantly undergoing modifications and enhancements. Buildings in the system include single and multiple story structures that may be constructed of wood, structural steel, masonry, brick, concrete, or other materials. All work to be reviewed by BFTE senior engineers or technical team leads. Tasks include:
- Analysis of existing structures for modifications and/or retrofits.
- Design of new structures.
- Structural and/or seismic evaluations of existing structures.
- Design for strengthening existing building vertical and/or lateral load resisting systems.
- Design of anchorage of equipment and nonstructural components.
- Production of various drawings including installation drawings, design criteria drawings, minor detailing drawings, and others.
- Design of fall protection anchorage on new and existing buildings.
- Produce structural calculations and written reports.
- Provide construction support.
Structural Maintenance and Program Sustainment:
- Provide engineering support and assistance for structural maintenance and program sustainment. All work to be reviewed by BFTE senior engineers or technical team leads. Tasks include:
- Assistance with structural (non-climbing) inspections.
- Support development of standards and specifications applicable to structural engineering.
- Structural adequacy assessments.
- Structural retrofit designs (seismic strengthening, remodels, additions, addition of roof loading such as HVAC units, etc.).
- Design of replacements related to aging infrastructure, particularly in the areas of steel corrosion and concrete deterioration.
- Design for replacements, refurbishments, and repairs related to unexpected damage of transmission line and substation structures (e.g. vehicle impacts, animal impacts, landslides, snow loading etc.).
- Assistance with material procurement tasks related to above repairs and replacements.
- Perform occasional Quality Assurance visits to both in-house and outside fabrication shops and provide recommendations for approval / rejection by BFTE senior engineers or technical team leads.
Technology Innovation and Research & Development Support:
- Provide support to BFTE structural engineers working in Technology Innovation division and Research and Development (R&D) related activities, which may include:
- Actual research or research support.
- Testing and working with testing personnel and vendors.
- Report writing and development, report presentation.
- Traveling to meetings, field visits.
- Working with industry representatives.
- Assisting corporate managers / team leads with developing justifications for funding
Education & Corresponding Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited college/university in structural engineering, civil engineering, or a closely related engineering field is required.
- 6 months of practical structural engineering experience.
- Must have professional knowledge of civil and structural engineering concepts and principles, as well as practical knowledge of conventional methodologies associated with the planning, design, and maintenance of public electric utilities, power plants, and transmission systems
Required Skills & Experience
- 6 months of experience with the following:
- Designs using the current International Building Code (IBC) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 7 and 10.
- Structural analysis software such as SAP2000, RISA, tnxTower, PLS-POLE, and other commercially available products.
- Modern structural analysis techniques.
- Industry specific design codes such as the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), American Concrete Institute (ACI), and others.
- Proficient with standard MS Office Suite products, such as Word, Excel, and Outlook
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Experience with Bentley MicroStation or other similar CAD programs.
- Knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, and practices applicable to components and facilities found on a regional transmission system.
- Knowledge of ASCE 41: Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings
